I rebooted and nothing happened. I know what is going to happen if I leave this PC on overnight though. Windows update is going to do a scheduled update at 2AM and do the Windows 10 upgrade. And I have no easy way to stop it. I uncheck it and it rechecked, what ever happened to free choice there Microsoft? I'm going to leave that PC running overnight to see what happens. Then refuse it again, and see if anything changes. If it's going to try and update every time I reboot the PC, well, if I said what I want to id probably get banned.

    Hi,
An "System Image Backup" and a "Repair Disc" Boot USB is as "secure" thing if Windows 10 is not wished.
I already did 2 or 3 times and works perfectly.
to be found under Control Panel > File History >System Image Backup

Aw, come on. Be a good sport.
    Succumb and comply.
You don't want Microsoft one user short of 1 billion, do you ?
    Kidding.

I have had a field day with my "computer challenged" alumni for at least a week now.

Thanks but, this is all just for testing purposes. When it's all done I'll be doing a clean install of Windows 10 anyway. I'm already happily running Window 10 on all my PC's. Except for this one at the moment.

I've read all of this thread and not seen anything about disabling Windows Update Service.
I upgraded my Windows 7 to 10 and am happy with it, I wouldn't change back now. However if I had decided that I prefer Windows 7 I would have rolled back from 10 and disabled updates until after 29th July.

Has anyone tried disabling updates and seen if Microsoft override it?

Microsoft has officially stated that no one is forced to upgrade to 10 until after they have agreed to the upgrade. Agreeing to the upgrade includes having clicked on the X to close the upgrade offer.

Okay but you shouldn't have to disable WU. That puts your system at risk.

Doogie, various technical sites advise you not to disable Windows Updates because of the risks to your system.

The update was already scheduled because of the default choice of installing recommended updates same as security updates. Closing the window with the X did not tell it to install but merely closed your chance to cancel it.

Where all this falls down is that many users haven't even a clue what an 'operating system' is and even what operating system they have. Its all meaningless to them. They just see it as an update of some sort, and so that must be a good thing.

In the morning they had a working PC, later in the day it doesn't work, or its all different. They have no idea what to do, no idea how to get things back.

I clean installed W10 for a friend a few weeks ago. Yesterday they mentioned something about an update (so it must have been last months normal round of W10 cummulatives), and from what they said it must have popped up a message to do a restart. They said they didn't know what to do and so just switched it off and back on. Restart... whats that !

Users like that are not the exception, they are a big percentage of users.
