How MSFT's tricky new Windows 10 pop-up deceives you into upgrading

The vast majority of computer users, (probably over 99%) are not computer savvy enthusiasts - they are the general public who use a computer as another domestic technology just like a TV or a Dishwasher or they are use a computer in work as a tool to do their job.
These users tend to use the Home version and they do not know (and do not want to know), enough to keep the system up to date and working Microsoft has covered this by taking away the controls on the Home version .
The works users would normally use an enterprise version which would be set-up by the company to work as the company wants it and it makes sense for the business to not allow the user to change anything and the enterprise version gives this control .
We then have the Pro version which is the version for the other 1% of users It has a lot more control than the home version and can even be used in an enterprise if needed.
Unfortunately we do see a lot of complaints from some enthusiasts about Dumbing down and lack of control when they are using a copy of The Home version, which is working as designed

Don't think I agree with you there. Firstly making an analogy using Windows (when you are discussing Windows) makes it a bit confusing. I'd have gone for "Doors" or "Can I pave your yard mate I've just found a van full of Tarmac"
Secondly the main point is that the guy didn't buy Windows 7. S/he most likely licensed it. So in actual fact it is not something you own (like the windows in your house or the doors or whatever) but rather something you rent like NetFlix or something. Generally an OS (especially if it is OEM) is not a thing that you can sell to someone else.
If you don't want Windows 10 then don't - it is hardly compulsory. You just say no.
If you want to slag off Windows 10 feel free but perhaps a Windows 10 website wouldn't be the best place.
Sorry my friend. You can argue all the semantics you want about licensing and ownership. The analogy was spot on- Microsoft goes too far. Licensing software (just as leasing or renting a house) does not give the owner the right to unilaterally change the software at will and bully or hassle users (or tenants) into accepting new terms. If you can't understand the accuracy of the analogy, then I'm afraid you're being willfully obtuse.

The update was already scheduled because of the default choice of installing recommended updates same as security updates. Closing the window with the X did not tell it to install but merely closed your chance to cancel it.
Not exactly. When I closed that Window with the RED X I got a second smaller window saying "You're all set!". Clicking the RED X does more than just close the Window.

Well my 8.1 PC didn't do the upgrade overnight? Why I don't know? It must only run if you click the get started shown in the box in Windows update. I hid that update and now that has gone back to the normal "You're set to automatically install updates" message. The Upgrade to Windows 10, Get Started message is gone, for now anyway.

The user of Windows (the software not the hardware) agrees to the EULA when installing - this gives Microsoft the right to do anything they want to the licensed software whilst in use by the licensed user, If you do not like this then you should not agree to the EULA and not use windows, (BTW refusing the Windows 10 EULA during the so called forced upgrade automatically rolls back the install )

100% agree mate. My landlord has sold my flat and I have to move out by October. That is fair as it is (at the end of the day) his asset and he has given me enough notice to find somewhere else.
I installed Windows 10 because I like it better than 7 or 8. And I like playing with things I guess. I find it quite fascinating that people complain about the upgrade procedure so much.
No-one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you update if you don't want to. If you can't understand the upgrade question it is probably better that MS updates you to 10 than not. If your IT skills are so limited you'd probably be safer on a more modern OS and for 99% of people that will be the case.
I think they are doing the right thing.

I don't know. I would let it upgrade - you'll end up with a faster smaller Windows system than you had before. The upgrade only takes half an hour or so anyway.
I do understand people getting the hump about it because they clicked the wrong button but considering 10 is better than 7 in almost every way (sorry to sound like some kind of evangelist) I think I'd let it do it's thing and pop out for a coffee or something.
Worst case (if you find the start menu really confusing or something) you can restore back.
