How MSFT's tricky new Windows 10 pop-up deceives you into upgrading

Here is the saddest part of this whole drama. The initial reaction to Windows 10 as an OS has been on par with XP and 7. When they first came out many people liked those OS's, but there were issues and there were haters. After the first year when solid applications began to roll out and the first Service Packs hit, you would find people buying new PCs with XP, and later 7 on them. Everyone won. Hardware manufacturers, application developers, user etc.

This time you have Microsoft forcing people to upgrade existing hardware before they want to or are ready. Who cares about legality, their methods are most certainly unethical, and to me ethics trump law. There are lots of laws that are unethical, bigoted etc. Judging one's actions by law is a very low bar indeed. (pardon the pun.)

Not to mention, all these forced upgrades just cause folks to delay buying new hardware. First, because they experience upgrade issues with their current drivers or applications. So they are hesitant to spend even more money on the new ecosystem. Second, if it does work well, then why buy new hardware? This whole thing has turned the market on its head for no reason. Then to add insult to injury they announce an open strategy and tell you that you can run your favorite Microsoft apps on any mobile or PC device.

Microsoft really needs to get themselves together. If they are smart, they'd kill off/remove the gwx and/or whatever else they are now using to push Windows 10. They could still offer it free, have a link to it on the Microsoft.com homepage until July, and let people get the bad taste out of their mouth in time for the release of Redstone. Then hopefully the users will be in a forgiving mood and go buy some new Windows devices.

Once again the same guy I posted about yesterday being forced to upgrade the shop computer to Windows 10, now checked his laptop this morning only to find Windows 10 in the process of completing the upgrade from Windows 7. He did not want to upgrade the laptop because the program he used for his handheld GPS would not work properly on his home desktop with Windows 10. Now I have the wonderful job of reverting back to windows 7 and trying to find a way to block the forced upgrade on his laptop. Thanks once again MS for finding ways to get your numbers up so the shareholders will be pleased. Geez what a wonderful MS Team you got there.

These are the same brilliant minds who decided to omit the Start Button on Windows 8.

I think the problem is that the upgrade has been scheduled in the first place, who gave permission for that ? sure you can say no (if you read the small print ) but no one is sure if a no means no anymore. and we have now seen that Microsoft clearly thinks a no means later.

Why cant Microsoft simply put a 'No Thanks' button the same size and a permanent opt out, isn't that really simple, why shouldn't the no button be as big as the OK button ?

How quickly we have become conditioned to believe that Microsoft has the right the schedule an upgrade in the first place, there will always be fans who defend Microsoft no matter what, who will be taken in by a ' shiny' new system that changes everything (even if it is just windows 8 stuffed in a start menu) and tiles which are clearly meant for mobile devices, amazing truly.

It's a bit like Double glazing salesmen turning up at your door asking if you want new windows, that they will fit for free, so long as they can peer into them any time they want, and plaster the odd advert here and there that you can read 'for your convenience' , you politely say no and explain you are happy with your own windows.

A few weeks later they call again and again you say no, and explain you are happy with your current windows'
A few weeks later you notice there is a pile of window frames and glass in your back garden, and later they call again explaining that they have been put there to save time should you at any time want their new windows. You explain forcefully that again, you are clear that you do not want their new windows. You get them to remove the window frames, clean your garden up and remove all traces

A few weeks later there is a knock at the door, there is standing the window man again saying he can pop round tomorrow to fit you new windows, you take one look, slam the door in his face and carry on with your day.
You come home from work the next day, and you see the new windows fitted, upon enquiring why you are told ''well you didn't say no, slamming the door is just that it's not an explicit no''

To further add insult to injury you are told, that if you have time you can have the old windows put back in so why are you even so angry, we have saved your old windows and can put it back..BUT they may or may not fit properly, it will take time during which you will not have access to your house and they may not fit the same as they did before.

As for me I purchased windows 7 because it was Windows 7 , I don't want anyone changing my legitimately purchased software to what they want me to have.. simple as, nor do I want them scheduling an upgrade I clearly do not want. I simply want Microsoft to keep their promise they made when I purchased this great OS in the first place.

I for one believe my computer is mine and mine alone, and no one will download multi GB files in the background without my explicit and clear permission. and that if I buy an OS with a term of support, then that is what I will get.

Install GWX Control Panel. It will block it.

After the end of July, someone somewhere is going to be shouting that they didn't get a chance to avail of the free upgrade and now they're being forced to pay and it isn't fair...

I am not "Inteclually Disabled",I know what I want and I am conscious of all. I will never update from 8.1 to 10 until MS realise that we want an OS that is running for the Tasks the User wants. Blocking, Locking, Preveting the user to use the PC as we wants is something like Virus! Preventing user to work is not Security. Also, they have to unlock the Automatic Updates, because if there is problems with an Update for one User he will have very hard time. Seems we have to do with Kids, playing around with the people PC´s.
As security measure I have done a System Image for the case.
That with system image is a very good thing and is working perfectly. So, W10 will never land on my PC.

Thanks John I shall check that out and hope MS don't work around that block before July 29th lol
