There seems to be no good fast and memory cheap free Antivirus product out there for Windows 10 until today. Ive tried Avast, AVG, Panda and Bitdefender free, all had troubles and flaws:

Avast free edition: permanent annoying 2-5% cpu idle processes, too many processes, lots of RAM sage
AVG free edition: same but better, way less RAM usage
Panda free edition: slow MB/s, good RAM usage
Bitdefender free edition: bluescreens of its sys driver, not compatible with Windows 10

So far AVG was the best of them all, performance wise. Am back to Windows Defender for now on my tablet.

Hi there

Those sorts of tests are usually meaningless - and in any case are always quite out of date since many (or no for that matter) new threats might be discovered between the publication of the test and the date you are using your computer on.

Use or don't use any of these 3rd party add ons -- it's your choice -- but remember these companies etc were started when the threats were far different and the OS'es had many more exploitable loopholes.

Many more people spend far longer on mobile phones than computers these days and few if any have any sensible AV installed on those.

IMO That's where the latest threats come from especially with "Password less" payment systems e,g Touch type payments - and of course giving too much data out over the net. Entering clear text passwords on mobile phones over public wifi systems poses far more security risks than any "neerdy" Virus designed to infect a PC -- those hackers have long since moved on to more "profitable ventures " !!!

Even connecting to your own network via a mobile phone connected via a public wifi system and entering a password is an open book --that's where you need to take care these days - especially as people enter clear text passwords without even thinking about it -- When using Phones people's Brains just seem to switch off !!!!.

Yea, unless you are downloading cracked software, checking out free porn sites, free porn dating sites, or clicking on links from friends with the subject line, "Check this out." You probably are fine with Defender. Much of today's viruses come from fake links etc. hacked into legit websites. things like WOT, or free services like OpenDNS help defend against bogus websites and many other malware type tricks. Not to mention Windows 10 supports sandboxing, Smartscreen etc. You could even use hyper-v and run your browser in a virtual machine if you feel the need to.

Many of these anti-virus test bypass Windows built in security and merely test how well the utility scans for viruses on the machine. So if you are the type to turn off all the security on Windows 10 and rely solely on your anti-virus scanner to find your baddies, then yea, I would pay for third party.

It's running smoothly and appears to be doing its job on my Insider box. Windows Defender is the one I've had problems with. After 14342 installed, Windows Defender tried to update definitions even though Bitdefender was running. From then, it went into an endless cycle of trying and failing to update. So I uninstalled Bitdefender to see if that fixed the Windows Defender update problem. It did. But other problems started. Classic Shell was very slow loading and Speedfan wouldn't start at all. I first thought that was likely tied to the recent cumulative update for 14342, not thinking Windows Defender could be causing problems. But I finally re-installed Free Bitdefender, which caused Windows Defender to back off, and the problems were instantly solved. Everything is running as it should now.

I use WD and also the free Malwarebytes. The Malwarebytes seems to work the same on 7, 8.1 and both types of 10. I can run it while making a cup of tea. The WD is quick unless you run the full scan.

Only 1 hiccup using Panda, false/positive, white listed it.
My prob was with Defender, Panda ON Defender Off, upgraded Defender tried to update found a prob still trying to update a week later!
