Music and Video Preview Apps for PCs Headed to Store for Windows 10

As we mentioned on January 21st, we’re bringing new universal applications that will ship with Windows 10 including new Music and Video apps. Today, we are pleased to be releasing early preview versions of these new apps for Windows 10 PCs. Windows Insiders can download the Music Preview and Video Preview apps directly from the Store Beta (grey tile) in the latest build of the Windows 10 Technical Preview. Get them here:

Download the Music Preview app (PC)
Download the Video Preview app (PC)

We still have a lot of work to do to get these preview apps to a place where they can replace the existing Music and Video apps on the PC – we just couldn’t wait any longer to get them onto your PCs and get your feedback. Enjoy!

    Music Preview App

    Features to try:

    • Browse and play your music collection: MP3s on your device, songs you’ve put in OneDrive, or music you’ve added to your collection with an Xbox Music Pass will all show up in the Music Preview App. Try out shuffling, filtering, and sorting your music collection. And try playing a Radio station based on one of your favorite artists or bands.
    • Make playlists: Make playlists with all your music including music from OneDrive. Just create a new playlist and drag and drop the songs you want in that playlist. You can access all your playlists across your Windows devices, Xbox consoles and on the web at music.xbox.com.
    • Xbox Music Pass: If you have an Xbox Music Pass, you can browse our full catalog and stream or download music for offline use and discover new music with artist radio stations.

    What’s coming next:

    • Browse and buy music in the Windows Store Beta– until then you can still buy music in the existing Music App
    • Right-click context menus
    • Better back button for easier app navigation
    • Dark color theme
    • Compact mode
    • Settings improvements
    • Improved support for accessibility
    • And much more!

Here’s what we know isn’t working quite right yet:

    • After heavy use you may see galleries disappear and show a blank white page. Restarting the app will solve the issue.
    • Playback of Music Pass content may fail with error 0x8004c029. If it does, go here to learn more about how to fix it.
    • There are no playback controls on hover when the app appears in the taskbar.

    Video Preview App

    Features to try:

    • Browse and play video files (including MKV!) on your device: Try out filtering and sorting your collection and adding a folder of videos to include in your collection.
    • Browse and play movies & TV shows you’ve purchased from any Xbox Video device: Try starting a purchased video on one Xbox Video device and pick up playback right where you left off on another device.

    What’s coming next:

    • Discover great new movies and TV shows in the Windows Store Beta – until then you can still get them in the existing Video App or the new web Store at here.
    • Download movies and TV for offline play
    • New device management so you can play your downloads offline more reliably on the devices you care about
    • Improved search results
    • Movie reviews and cast information
    • Settings improvements
    • And much more!

Here’s what we know isn’t working quite right yet:

    • Movies and TV shows downloaded in other versions of the app cannot be played in this preview app. They can only be streamed. This preview app only supports streaming at this time.
    • Playback of purchased content may take several seconds to begin.
    • Adding or removing folders from your video library can hang the app. Instead, use File Explorer to manage your video library.
    • Playback of movies and TV may fail with error 0x8004c029. If it does, go here to learn more about how to fix it.
    • Expired rentals incorrectly show a play button. Playing expired content will result in a playback error.

Remember that these are just previews of these apps – we need your feedback! Please submit your feedback, both problems and suggestions, on the Music and Video Preview apps in the Windows Feedback App.

The Windows 8.1 Music and Video apps from the non-beta Store (green tile) will run side-by-side with these preview apps and can be used to purchase content.

Thank you for your continued support,
The Music and Video App Teams

    Windows 10

This is something I am interested in, anyone tried these yet?
I have had to give up at the moment on TP or I would try myself, only because by BB is so slow it is a pain to download

One thing I don't understand, or perhaps I do but not 100% clear
If you have a music pass, you can browse/stream/download anything from the store direct from the app (but not buy)
If you don't have a music pass the only way to view the content is through the store (current beta one), this is coming soon

I downloaded the Music Preview but frankly, I don't see a big difference between that and the Music app already available with Windows. I couldn't get the Music artwork to display in the Preview when the songs played. Maybe it is user error but I'll keep looking at it.

The most obvious differences for me is that with the Music app I can play music I have on OneDrive. Music Preview strangely will let me display artwork - just not play any music Could be pebcak though.

Windows Media Player still works and is great. It is much nicer to use for music than the music app or the preview one.

WMC was (for me) pointless and rather ugly. I have a license but never used it. As far as I understand it was useful for people with TV Tuners which never really took off here. There are other better alternatives (XMBC I think) but TV has never really been my thing - I just watch whatever is top of the download list in the US.

The Music Preview appears to be nothing more then XBOX Muisc player just a different color. It isn't bad, albeit it leaks the ability for the user to set it up the way he/she would like. I am not a big fan of the idea that a player just goes and fines all the music on a system and then sets it up the way the coders think it should be. Hopefully this is a preview that will be reworked so that the individuals using this player will have the ability to setup the player the way they would like. . .other then that it isn't all that bad..

As long as it doesn't decide to change the tags you've spent years setting of course like it did in the past. I'm not against the idea but there are lots of $10 a month services and this doesn't look better enough for me. Without streaming your own stuff (which doesn't work but presumably should) it is only a slightly worse WMP.

I have the music I want already. If I feel like listening to blues without having to pick it out while I do the cooking or washing up I'll find some old git DJ from Louisiane on TuneIn radio or something.

Guess I'm not the target market...
