I added a picture above in post 16. These are the updates that fixed the transparency thing although I don't know which...

What happens if you have File Explorer open, then open the Start Menu?

You still have it full screen. Try clicking on the reduce arrow shaped icon thing in the top RHS.

K, but I'm on Build 10014 right now on this stupid Spartan which, incidentally, doesn't let you post images unless you 'Go Advanced' either!
    Back in a sec!

Yes,, but I thought that's what MS had intended it to look like in the first place.,

Who knows their intention. Not like this presumably Transparent/Screen - Windows 10 Forums
@Edwin had a great comedy picture also but I can't find it...

Anyway, it seems to be much better today than yesterday.

We all have been discussing while still on full screen and no one has mentioned the minimised start screen

    Hi there

I don't think transparency was ever a problem with the "standard" (non full screen) start menu. There's a minimal amount. I removed the metro apps from mine to emphasize the level of transparency with a plain background.

In any case since I'm using a custom toolbar for my programs now I don't think I'll bother with the standard menu any more.

I'll wait until Touch is implemented properly to see what happens on Touch devices.

    Cheers
