Access your music collection from OneDrive with Xbox Music app

    Posted: 18 Mar 2015

Starting today, you can now access your personal music collection from OneDrive across your Windows devices with the Xbox Music app for free! Just upload your music files to your new “Music” folder in OneDrive and that music will appear in the Xbox Music apps for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 as well as on your Xbox 360 and Xbox One. You can even listen to your music from OneDrive on the web too. No Xbox Music Pass required. However, if you do have an Xbox Music Pass (like me!), we’ll give you an extra 100GB of storage on OneDrive for free for all your music.

For me, I have a bunch of music I purchased from various online services over the years. I’ve put all that music on OneDrive and whether I’m at home on my Xbox One, or at work on my XPS 13, or in my car connected via Bluetooth to my Lumia 1520 – I can listen to all this music. You can even create playlists with this music too and they work on all your devices. Because I have an Xbox Music Pass, I’ve even created playlists that combine my music from OneDrive as well as music from my Xbox Music Pass subscription. To the Xbox Music app – it just sees one big happy music collection.

Windows Phone users take note: If you do not have an Xbox Live account and never used the Xbox Live service before – you may need to sign up for an Xbox Live account here in order to have your music from OneDrive show up in the Xbox Music app for Windows Phone 8.1. We recognize this experience isn’t ideal and are working on a fix to make it better.

This is good news for me, I love my music, I don't know why Microsoft couldn't have just pointed Onedrive to the Music folder but who cares this will do me.

One of my main obsessions with computers is to get everything digital, movies, videos and music. I couldn't wait to get off vinyl with all the hissing popping and rumbling and I had some pretty expensive gear. Even when I buy a Blu Ray movie I rip it straight onto my NAS and stream it from there.

I'm in no hurry to digitize my music. I haven't listened to my records in years. As for my cds, I rarely listen to them in the house. I mainly listen to them when I'm driving and both of my vehicles have cd players.

When I jump in my car, my radio senses my phone and then I play the music off that, or I burn a whole lot of mp3s onto a disc and play that.

My radios don't have bluetooth or any other way to connect to my phone. I not sure if they will play mp3s or not I'll have to try it someday. That would be nice on long trips.
