Windows 10 to launch 'this summer' with free upgrades even for pirated

Microsoft has inched closer to announcing an official release date for Windows 10. The new operating system, which is currently in a public preview release, "will launch in 190 countries and 111 languages around the world this summer," according to the company.Executive Vice President Terry Meyerson, who runs the Windows division, made the announcement at the WinHEC conference in Shenzhen, China, yesterday.
In a separate interview, Meyerson told Reuters that the company plans to deliver free Windows 10 upgrades to all customers, even those running pirated versions of Windows. "We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," Meyerson told Reuters.

Windows 10 will be also free for pirated versions, that is pretty interesting move as well.
MS would like, if everyone would move to 10, because right now 7 is becoming the new XP.
By offering a free update, people will be somewhat forced to upgrade, unless they really hate 10.

Microsoft is going to just about anything to make W-10 numbers look good.
Just think when counterfeit Window 7 get converted to legal Window 10. Their will be millions and millions of them in China alone.

It isn't really about making the numbers 'look good'. Their current mode of operation is to get as many people tied to their ecosystem as possible through Windows 10, and then use that connection to monetize the customer. If you use Cortana, that then has Bing on the backend, which then eats part of Google's lunch and increases advertising revenue for Microsoft.

Apparently if you upgrade a pirated version you'll only end up with pirated version of 10 though. Upgrading to Windows 10 on pirated versions wont get you a valid license

    I found this very interesting.
Updating from an ISO is great but will we be able to do a clean install with it?
    Inquiring minds want to know.

For RTM versions, no wander, not officially supported anyway. RT practically does not exist any more. Phone 8.1, well how else to upgrade ? Can't do it from CD etc. anyway. Windows 8 needs to be upgraded first anyway, support will not last for it, it's recommended to upgrade/update to 8.1. So, it's left for W 8.1 and W 7SP1 (probably updated to the end) to be able to upgrade fully. At the end, those are just conjectures and rumors for now, I don't think even MS knows exactly what will happen and which way.

Right -- and don't be surprised if after an initial period (probably no more than 30 days), the upgraded "pirated" PC suddenly locks up until the owner provides MS an "unlock" fee. If everyone is on Win10, the Win7 "activation hacks" won't work anymore (most likely) and MS will work around those to get folks locked into Win10.
