Once you go into the Start>Settings>System>Apps & Features and hit Edge or the browse you have set as the default you then simply scroll the list of choices to see another one made the default. When first going to reinstall FF or one of the other non MS browsers or when you are prompted to download the latest and you go to put that one then you are asked to make that the default browser where I simply leave the always check box unticked since I don't need to constantly see the prompting.
Yeah, that's about what I do. If I'm going to use more than one browser during testing, I will uncheck that box too.

One thing for certain it doesn't matter if you set another browser as the default or simply leave Edge untouched since the problem seems to be universal! Something was changed on Edge since the 14295 build came out that would explain why everyone is running into the lack of the typical preview thumbnail popup and raised button on the taskbar. But you have to remember which many still don't fully realize is that since Edge is still totally new it's still a work in progress unlike IE and all of the other browsers which have seen 30 or 40 consecutive releases over several years.
Yep, no matter how you slice it or dice it, whether you go in from Settings or Control panel, you will end up in the same place. And, I am quite sure that no matter which browser is my default, I will get the "how do you want to open this" box. It's as simple as that and thus far, there's nothing any of us can do to change it. I guess we'll just have to wait for another build.

Oh yeah, I remember Edge is a work in progress. With each new build, I try to use it, but invariably, I'm forced back to Firefox. Maybe one of these days, Edge will be usable, so until that time, I'll try to use it when Microsoft sets it back as my default browser with each new build and if it doesn't work out, I'll stay with what does work.

    Sorry I wasted your time.
Hope you will get this sorted out.
    Good luck.
It's not a waste of time, David. The more we discuss this, the more we will know what doesn't work.

Believe me, I've hassled this problem from every angle and tried every suggestion given whether I think it will work or not. That is except for setting everything back to what Microsoft thinks I should have. :) I ain't agonna do that!

The only time you would even consider the reset option for anything is when something changes the defaults. But at this time not many will want Edge set this way despite some who favor it the browser simply isn't ready quite yet as the finished replacement for IE. This is something totally new for 10 and apparently is now running into a new bug after something was changed..

Here due to problems first seen with IE stalling having multiple browser windows forcing me to seek out a replacement 5yrs. ago I had tried the 32bit only back then FF, Opera, and then Waterfox the first 64bit FF variant as well as Flock, Chrome(with those two almost identical in several ways) maybe Pale Moon in the past but back on again now and for a novelty more then anything Nescape Navigator to add to the collection. Cyberfox was looked at when the 64bit FF had to be used to replace Waterfox when that suddenly got buggy with the next couple of releases followed by FF 43 and 44.0.1 doing the same. Cyberfox was then used for a bit until FF 44.02 saw the problems for multiple windows stalling fixed. And then the lastest WF releaase now on took care of that one.

With 16gb of ram and a quad core cpu you wouldn't expect a browser after another browser after even another browser to be seeing freeze ups simply when having second and third windows left open. So far with this build in addition to the latest release for each I can now have a dozen going at once and nothing locks! Edge however has this one new bug as well as not playing well when trying to get bookmarks organized without stretching it across two monitors! This has been the only browser so far to be seeing that type of only in alphabetical order are bookmarks arranged with hardly any means to reorganize them where the most often used can simply be dragged out in front of the lesser used.

There's 2 more places that have not been exhaustively discussed - Outlook helper programs and add ins, which may direct the opening of links (or not opening them without confirmation). However, IIRC, it was mentioned that the same behaviour occurred in different email clients and in webmail like gmail, so perhaps the clues can be found in

    - the web page html details of the specific emails that ask for a program, and those that do not, and open automatically. (obviously without personal data being divulged)

As far as I know, webmail works fine. Just email clients are affected.

But yours first suggestion is ruled out because of Windows Mail app is also affected and i don't think it uses Outlook helper and add ins.

And for the record, and to relieve Wynona from doing this :), I did reset everything to MS defaults. Didn't help.

Keep in mind, not everyone is having any issues with this build.

This is referring to resetting defaults or something other? I'm not pressing anyone :)

Another question, that was never asked: to which account did the mail with problematic link came to? Mine are all to gmail account.
This crosses my mind, since I remember that Google was posting some articles about strengthening security...

Yes, someone who has our problem in other email clients said webmail isn't affected. I'm so bleary-eyed that I can't remember who it was, though.

What about Outlook.com, Andre? Is it affected? My guess is that it must be webmail too.

Although I know that "reset" will change all my defaults to what Microsoft originally set them to, and won't change anything, I say, "thank you" Andre, for doing that to save my hide!I'm to the point of, "I'm not going to worry about it any more and let (hopefully) the next build take care of it."

I can just see all those Microsofties that got Build 14316 to test drive going crazy trying to figure this one out.
