OK, thanks. I guess that this runs deeper than just how I access a program or app, it goes to the root level of how a program or app is executed.

    Thank you.

Practically it also means that APPs are downloaded and installed thru the Store, desktop programs are everything else.

    +1,,

@Rocky for example. The Weather app from the store is an "app" while the tool I use to program in Python is a desktop program. I can only install it via an instillation program from the Python.org site and not via an app from the MS store.

I hope that helps aa bit to clarify the difference.

So have I. It has saved my bacon a few times when the start menu has gone on the blink. And to be honest, I have always found it very useful to have desktop shortcuts available.

    Mine are : Settings/ Control Panel/ Command Prompt/ This PC/ Notepad/IE11/Edge/Chrome/Office items
If you look back at the screen I posted earlier you will notice "System" as well as "Utilities" as two additional toolbars on the main bar there that contain shortcuts for the Disk Management, Command prompt, Event Viewer, Services, Create Restore point shortcuts, etc. as well as one for the Control Panel itself. Those are in addition to having the CP pinned on the main bar as well. Yet no clutter to find on the desktop itself while having a very busy task bar.

Yeah, but I want MS to offer the options!!!
Have fun trying to get them to move on anything like that. I even submitted some feedback about the previously seen options to assign wav files to logging on and off of Windows not found in 10 as well as having the option to change the default Startup sound someone put originally for something else for a change. That will likely sink like a lead balloon at their end fast enough! To be expected is how to review all this.
