Microsoft knows a lot of servers are Linux so I suppose they are offering support to manage those servers from a Windows desktop ...
"Server Management" seems like a plausible hypothesis.

    Hi Jimbo45

(not to derail the thread, but I was just curious as you seem to be very technically capable :)) why do you dislike tabbed browsing? I only ask, because it's so darned convenient to me, that I'm surprised to see someone dislike it.
    Hi there
When you've got 4 - 6 Monitors it's much easier to have several instances all visible rather than just have the tabs showing.

On a smart phone / tablet / other system with a smallish piece of screen real estate then tabbed browsing makes sense.

Also if you are doing a lot of cutting / pasting from one screen to another or even say translating stuff you need to have all the applications visible at the same time -- that's why I HATED Windows 8 -- it wasn't made for running applications in this way but more like a "Big mobile phone".

    Cheers

When Windows 8 came out, it was totally a different OS from what we are all got used to. There was a steep learning curve for everybody. A curve that, IMO, is the same if you learn Linux coming from Windows 7.
I use both OS. Windows is easy but getting boring nowadays. Linux is not that easy but very interesting to learn. Linux is not all about BASHing these days. It's much like Windows now with all those new eye candy GUI. I welcome this new development.

    Hi there

some things on Linux could definitely be ported to Windows

For example here's Dolphin (equivalent to Windows explorer / file explorer)

Much nicer GUI and easier to navigate -- don't you think for example Windows explorer could do with a facelift after all these years. !!

    Cheers

    Hello, jimbo45

Again it will all depend after July 2016 and when Redstone 2016 gets updated through out the market/system I believe Windows will be not too far off of being open source sometime before 2016 for sure in 2017

It has to their is no other choice if Microsoft want to complete in the global tablet or mobile sector that as you know will be mostly cloud based and before 2020 fully cloud powered...

The writing has been on the wall since windows 8 in a nutshell regarding cloud based apps and interactions and open source will need to be the new standard

" The impossible is actually possible at Microsoft, one of the company's engineers claims.
Speaking at the open-source-focused ChefCon this week, Microsoft engineer and Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich said something unheard of: "it's definitely possible" that Windows could eventually go open source in the very near future "

Does that mean we could see the return of dos, windows 3.1, 95, 98se, me, nt, 2000, xp, vista, 7, 8.1?

Windows 98se can't run on most newer system do to a memory bug. Maybe some developer could fix that.

Note, I included windows 7 and 8.1 because support will end in a few years.

Bash is basically a scripting tool in Unix/Linux where the user types commands that cause actions. Bash can also read commands from a file, called a script.

Sort of like Windows command line interface.
I would rather compare it to PowerShell, especially to PowerShell ISE (Integrated Scripting Environment). In screenshot a simple three command line PS script from video I posted a few days ago, how to create a shortcut for a script that starts (boots) a Hyper-V vm, launches its process window and waits until user terminates that process (closes the window), thereafter automatically shuts down the vm:

The example above is really simple but that's scripting.

I can see no cons in bringing Bash natively to Windows, without need to use third party tools.

That would be neat to run xfce desktop on windows 10. Does this also mean you could run wine on 64 bit Window 10 and run windows 16 bit programs?
As far as I know, based on information available at the moment it will only be a console, no graphical user interface.

    @groze,

I get your point and its my fault for not being specific " sorry about that that's my fault "

The answer is yes to all of your OS past and current questions, example dos is windows and always will be windows at the foundation level.

Things changed lots with windows 95 with an add on " lets call it form UI or Desktop Interface with hardware policies and requirements

from windows 95 right up to windows 10 " its the same identical core formula " with a few more features and kernel changes "

The Kernel <---------------- is the most extensive and most labour taxed through out Microsoft's Windows development division , lots of wrench time and testing beyond anyone's imagination, each Windows new version has the Kernel bumped up a point or re-written to accommodate new standards in hardware and tie in the new extended features and options that will be included in the new version of Windows.

Microsoft set to announce bash on Linux running on Windows 10-330px-kernel_layout_svg.png

With that said if open source was implemented you would have options example to copy parts or windows 95 and introduce it to Windows 2000 and again bring services or features from Windows 10 across also and migrate " just an example "

The Kernel will be a hit and miss mission in the process but lets leave this one alone " I am just walking you through it fast "

Microsoft can provide a script that is in the size of 9 MB's that will make any Windows open source for you within 15 to 20 mins as soon as the script completes its command and with a hex tool or MS certified compiler tool your will be able to see the " Billion Dollar Gem In front of your eye's to program anything in this world to Windows or heart desires " hardware. apps, features' and so on if you know around some programing in general...

Hope I make some sense, Groze

At the meantime we just have to wait and see if Microsoft will unleash and make Windows/Windows 10 Open Source where many programmer experts, on every side of the fence say they will have no choice down the road in the future to succeed in the changes of times and technology down the road and in the future... " where everything will be one day in our life time all cloud powered and sim card controlled"

Plug in your SIM Card to any device and presto all your purchased apps and where you left off and everything you have today on your PC/Device Investment will be all there just like you experience it today but lots more brand new services and features with that said, " that's correct you wont be able to do it with todays specs or hardware " and yes we will all again be pleasantly informed that we all need to upgrade again down the road... That's where its all heading , doesn't matter if your going with an Apple device or a Google device or least but not last a Microsoft device
