With past versions nothing lately that would entail a custom install while booted into the present copy of Windows in order to install another version or edition to another partition or drive rather then simply upgrading the copy of Windows you were in. A guide on dual booting two versions like the one for setting up a dual boot of 10 with one of the previous versions would be what to go by for any of that at this time however.

As for the optical side I have to use a dvd in order to upgrade the old 7 laptop to 10 which ended up seeing a few clean installs to follow! That was for the July 29th launch with the 10240 build however. Before I could get the TH2 in December however the laptop's drive I can verify as well as the laptop not seeing anything displayed with the replacement in wasn't too reassuring the laptop was still any good and will need to sent to a shop for repair.

A new 10 laptop was then purchased also likely seeing the 10240 as well since the new model came out in September. Have to wait not for TH3 and the warranty to run out before doing much with that however.

I never seriously entertained a custom (clean) install from an ISO image on the same NTFS hdd primary partition thinking that as in the past it would not work anyway .

This HP P7 that came with win 7x64 in late 2010 won't allow booting from a USB in the HP Bios boot menu that doesn't break my heart because like a bad write or disk burn I've seen some of my USB flash drives go wonky also even after using them without any issues usually a format or two can fix them but not always . I loaded the HP Elite Book with a Windows 10 RTM 10240 pro image from a DVD for a clean install same for all the PC's here those are all normally activated 10586th2 now .

HP likes to tattoo their OEM BIOS and often they will not recognize a video card or CPU upgrade especially if the wattage is higher than what the max is in optional OEM configurations or if it's a much newer part or even if you upgrade the PSU .

The HP OEM legacy BIOS are usually pretty locked down and hard to find a hacked BIOS for .

That makes a good argument for custom builds for upgraders . I rolled my own builds for years but now I just buy new HP's outside of the one off lease Dell business slim tower here .

I've upgraded both of the HP P7 CPU ,HDD ,RAM and sound and installed d/GPU's on them here and one with a much bigger PSU to accommodate a stonking nvidia gaming d/GPU on the SB i7 box but sometimes it's trial and error with the maximum upgrade part the OEM BIOS will recognize with a CPU and d/GPU even within a similar type part .

Aftermarket mainboards are much more flexible in that way .

I have just confirmed that I'm still on the fast ring and I haven't done a clean install.
I guess you've done all the other things that have been suggested? Stop and restart the Insider program, etc.?
