Important information about HERE apps on Windows Phone

We’ve been developing mobile maps applications for about 10 years, since the first smartphones came with GPS. As the market evolves, we keep in step by introducing our apps for new operating systems while stopping support for others.Although the essence of the HERE apps lives on in the Windows Maps app, we are removing the HERE branded apps from the Windows 10 store on March 29, 2016 and will limit the development of the apps for Windows Phone 8 to critical bug fixes.

What does this mean for you exactly?

If you have a smartphone with Windows 10

In the last few months, we made the HERE apps compatible with Windows 10 by using a workaround that will no longer be effective after June 30, 2016. To continue offering the HERE apps for Windows 10 would require us to redevelop the apps from the ground up, a scenario that led to the business decision to remove our apps from the Windows 10 store.

This means the HERE apps will no longer work on devices running Windows 10 mobile after June 30, 2016. To prepare for this change, we have also decided to remove the HERE apps from the Windows 10 store on March 29, 2016.

For maps, routes and navigation, we recommend using the preinstalled Windows Maps application. The Windows Maps app contains many HERE elements since Microsoft has developed it using the HERE Platform and with assets they received from HERE in 2014. Based on your comments on HERE 360 and elsewhere, we know many of you are already having a good experience using Windows Maps.

If you have a smartphone with Windows Phone 8 or a PC with Windows 8

HERE is deeply integrated in the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The HERE apps for Windows Phone 8 will continue to work for you without any disruption. However, we made the business decision to stop the development of new features. Additionally, the maps developed specifically for Windows Phone will not be updated.

"... we made the HERE apps compatible with Windows 10 by using a workaround that will no longer be effective after June 30, 2016"

What changes are happening on that date that will break their apps? Is that when Redstone is going to be released?

TBH, I've been expecting this was going to happen, as the Here apps are the last to go. Of the apps that were in Windows Phone 8, the ones that weren't Microsoft ones (Lumia apps, Here Apps, MixRadio, etc.) have either been merged into Microsoft Apps or deprecated.

It's not necessarily a bad thing as there was too much duplication before, which was messy and confusing, I.E. Here Maps, Here Transit, Here Drive, Microsoft Maps. So having it all in one app that can be used across all devices makes more sense. Maybe a bit of a bummer for people in countries where the Windows Maps voice navigation doesn't work as well as Here Drive did. And I also think the Windows Maps app needs to have a 'Driving Mode' where it acts more like a full screen in-car Navigation system (like Here Drive).

Still gutted that MixRadio was deprecated though, as that functionality wasn't merged into Groove Music. Just need a way to remove old apps from the Windows Store library now, as I seem to have more apps that 'Don't work on this device' than apps that 'Work on this device'.

    Thanks for that info @Brink!

W10 Mobile is slowly getting better!
I figured navigation was being condensed into 'Maps', it finally works flawlessly and effortlessly on Build 10586.164!

Turn by turn spoken navigation, even if you lose or wander away from your signal/connection!
And, unlike Google Maps, it will re-route you on the fly if you make a wrong turn, without a connection! (You must download the area maps).

(I just noticed, my car is a pigsty!)

Now, if they would just get Cortana and Groove to work like it did in W8.1!!!

The HERE navigation is quite nice. I used it recently to find my way in and out of the conference center in Orlando.
