I think they (MS) already know that and they make money from many other ways.

That's REALLY OLD NEWS !!!

Ms has for a long time been making a huge amount of revenue from OFFICE and SERVICE contracts - plus actually it's getting some really interesting work in the area of Robotics / hardware for handicapped people / VR and all sorts of other stuff -- getting to be quite an exciting company like IBM used to be back in the days of "Big Blue".

(It's quite funny in a way but Ms is also making money on LINUX contracts for servers !!!!!!)

If you look at the stock price too - the Market and investors have a great deal of confidence in the future direction Ms is going in.

Here's the 1 Yr graph -- tend definitely upwards - and that's good given the total uncertainty of World economics, China, etc etc.



Not easy to stay top once your market has matured - Ms IMO are doing a lot of things correctly -- most of these aren't headline stuff --I'll bet load on this very Forum hadn't a clue just how big Ms is in Robotics and VR.

I think it's pretty clear big changes are happening. Although, how I see the future doesn't involve the Desktop disappearing (by desktop I mean a desktop type interface and using a mouse, keyboard and monitor), just lots of user choice on how they want to use a computer. It won't matter what input device you want to use, whether it be a mouse & keyboard, a touchscreen, an Xbox controller, pen, or gestures with a 3D camera and it won't matter what display you use, whether it be a big TV screen, monitor or goggles, the actual computer will be on a server somewhere and you choose how you want to interact with it.

This is one of the reasons why I think it's not Microsoft who are in trouble, but some of the other companies, as Microsoft already have this all set up and sat there waiting. As per the article, Cloud, Xbox and Office are already bigger than Windows. In THIS video (starting at 5:20) it shows a game running on an Xbox. When the game requires more compute power it hands it off to a server and then another server, then another, etc. depending on demand required. Seeing this in action you start to think that if you had fast, reliable, inexpensive internet access, then there would be little need for the Xbox at all, other than for offline use.

And that technology would extend to pretty much any device, so if all your software, games, music, documents, etc. are stored on a server that you just log into, and that server handles all the compute power as well, the only thing a local computer would need to be is a display and input device with a internet connection. Possibly also local storage for private data and backups that you don't want stored on a remote server.

In my eyes Apps are a fad diet, however when compute power becomes handled by cloud servers, then there will be no stopping the full-fat software and games that have always been Window's main appeal.

Agreed -- Have a look at my Stock graph I posted just before you posted to the thread. Ms is a winner however you look at it.

One thing I'd love Ms to do -- design a decent OS for a NAS box -- currently QNAP is a bit of a joke and to get anything decent you have to "Roll your Own". W10 works but really isn't suitable -- using a desktop OS as a Server isn't the best way of using a server !!!.

Linux is good for a dedicated NAS box (I'm using CENTOS) but can take a lot of effort when people just want an OOB system. The current licensing on Ms server OS'es are just too complex and expensive for HOME servers -- maybe Ms should revive the old Home server OS they had -- based on say W10 or W2012 server.

all research like robotics, VRs etc. didnt make money
even there might some investor interesting buying their stock for investment
but before they make "real product", it wont make money for sure ...

i think almost everybody know that MS income are mostly from corporate/enterprise, goverment , and cloud/server, then retail channel that contracting for windows license that make money for MS

anyway that MS stock graph, the price like up for only 10 point in past 2 year?
well funny enough the graph kinda similar to google stock, except the price is like few times higher lol
and if talking stocks, people should check facebook that keep rising nicely
