Well that is another point taken! I ran with Mic A foobar early on however and had been instantly displeased back with 95! 98SE on the other hand was first to experience the bloatware factor. AVG Free sounded real good back when XP was new! Vista followed and then 7 arrived but was still seeing IE factors while IE 7 fixed a major long time security risk IE 6 mare! And you wonder why FF got so popular? he he he on MS taking too long!

When 7 first arrived Trend Micro was a first thought as far as the paid for stuff goes but still seemed to lack! Just took a look at the 2016 AVG Internet Security and naaaa.... You see when av programs were simply what people were findng wasn't enough they started looking the new av kid on the block Sunbelt bringing something new in.

An updated base for the retail side while the long timers were still stuck in old school thinking is what was starting to take notice! Suddenly everybody had to "Internet Security" to compete with the new kid. The end result wasn't always so productive however for the typical user! The corporations on the other hand with the resources simply saw a new tax write off making the av companies discover a pot of gold!

Personally the decision here wasn't to simply pay out for some new program but find something I could point some other... somewhat lazy? users would go for instead of the need to fix their wanderings all over! Even the kids managed to pull in some good ones when the laptops were first being loaned out! I also was the one asked ot assemble all the newer desktop builds until the laptops they decided were more interesting! Gee photos and social networking has more or less kept them away from the previously seen bugs at least!

    Night Hawk
For the longest time if I spotted a bagle worm in a strange new email.....
I try not to open strange e mails or put strangers things into my PC thing .....you know the ones you plug things into and all that !

Ofc if you work with students (and P.C. stupid people or newbies ) outside of locked down firewalls on intranets and or high digital garden walls no matter what you do it's a crap shoot with any risk mitigation ....................

OTOH I'm not so sure the propositions you are entertaining in this thread are all that for experienced and expert level PC enthusiasts and the IT and software professionals you would expect to find *here* that would presumably all have a strategy and backups in place that works for *them*

Is paying for antivirus a waste of money?-avoid-all-costs-pyramid.jpg

    Are "You" at risk?

I could even one step further in explaining why I would let a bug loose intentionally back in the XP days before SP2 arrived! The hard boots, BSODs, program crashes, freeze ups in Windows, etc. would have ended up doing more harm to hardwares then any bug would have done to Windows itself despite the type of bug! When letting something loose I was already about ready to nuke a drive clean anyways from a problematic OS!

Speaking of Is paying for antivirus a waste of money? I just had to add this one in since it coincides with a statement earlier about WD having been obviously updated through the years in form as well as seeing regular definition type updates familiar with av programs in general. How effective is in 10? is what a ZDNet report just out sums up.

One little piece in this one regarding what MS does seems to sum things up. The question of what is good was asked and someone from BitDefender being pointed at by the blogger sums up why a former Symantec analyst would pick that program's freebie over...

So Botezatu is right that if you want the best protection, Microsoft doesn't give it to you. It's reasonable to believe that it's still not trying to, but by improving its product it prods the rest of the industry to do so, although it's already a highly competitive industry, one of the most for non-free client-based software.
