The thing is we're talking about members on this forum and what they do and not others who are not members here.

I would think that most of the members here know how to deal with a virus/malware or can find help here. Trying to convince
members here who have many years of OS experience that they don't know what they are talking about or doing is a bit
of an insult. Like I've said before I don't use a third party AV(Pay/Free) and I don't know when I had my last virus.. must have been over
    10 years.

SO.. bottom line.. you want to pay for one fine. But others don't need convincing on what to do
    with their PC's.

If you like a third party AV.. fine.
This is silly at this point. There's not a single AV that can protect you from an new
virus or malware. It's the stuff between your ears that keeps you safe..

Oh and YMMV on the last part.

AV vs AV ....Right they may all work differently and look for different heuristics and behaviors and paid or free doesn't necessarily determine all that anyway .

I never had and don't have any problems with WD on Windows 10 myself along with mbam free ofc. .

I just rolled in AVG free on the boxes & the laptop other family members use because the independent lab test are higher but that's no guarantee of anything at all ............they are all obsolete or outdated from the malware geysers in a minute anyway even with 24/7 updating and I was able to get the mabam anti exploit free

    Depends.
    In my opinion, yes; but,
some users have the knowledge and means to get by without it, others don't.

The lucrative antivirus industry, however, has been largely built upon users ignorance and insecurities.

My issue with third party AV's,, well one of them is that they interfere with some of
my programming. When I used one it would constantly check out all of my Python
scripts each time I ran it.. and that becomes a PITA fast.

For me defender is just right.. fast and not intrusive.

And how users out there are potential customers? That is precisely the point! Most of the "out theres" do lack while those of us here have an excellent "Support Base" to work with!

The point there being if one of us gets into one of those jam ups we still have others that have just a wee bit more experience in actually fending off some types of bugs. Things I learn from each encounter like not having anything running is how some new one is able to conceal itself. This was a tactic I learned some time back when not looking into the retail end of things.

At times I have been able to urk some av site's support staff by not having used "their" special removal tool but was able to manually locate and remove the primary element. Then the regular av would come in and clean up the "loose ends"?! I think the one thing that urked me the most about the more basic av removers was the "data miner" excuse for tracking cookies being nothing more then text files! But wouldn't be able to stop the next actual bug from arriving while out on the web.

For the longest time if I spotted a bagle worm in a strange new email I would grab some of the important files backing them up to 3.5"s or burning coasters! Then I would let it loose to watch the effect! The idea was to see how a self replicating worm operated by recoding files. Did lose a few on occasion until the time came when one av program or security toolbar being added still wasn't a working formula. Then I had to look back at what one electronics instructor had mentioned about developing your "problem solving skills"!

The av and other security software companies became "Fortune 5s" by already having learned those tricks! One of the biggest concerns years back wasn't about bugs being detected and removed but software clashes with paid for av programs as well as some being labeled "bloat wares"! Resource grabbers another label to add to the list of grievances I ended up conferring with a few that are still rather well learned problem solvers one being a mechanical engineer who did work for MS at times as well as still being in contact with a former Symantec security analyst who doesn't use Norton even! A few others were program developers with some useful tips!

The present program here was pointed at when deciding to give the free stuff a good rest and start taking a look at the paid for. I was tipped off the then recently new program had a light footprint and barely clashed with any softwares. That also includes running full sweeps in the background not needing to be disabled while gaming which has previously been a major urk in that category! Of course don't forget the capacities of hardwares also grew which then compensated for the resource grabbers.

Not an unreasonable position IMO a lot of it is not unlike the snob audiophile business IMO and it seems the FEDs ,B2B,bansters,retailers and DOD contracters etc may be getting ripped off with whatever they use on big iron ,embedded XX devices ,terminals ,BYOD and PC's so it's all a crap shoot ....and a back up is often the best remedy once you step in a mess or it comes your way anyway........

I've had software conficts ,slower boot times ,excessive resource use and false positives and crashes with MaCaFail and to a leeser extent Avast free and AVG free in the past not so much with WD at all or 2016 AVG free AFAIK .. so I can belive that all that supports a good argument for WD .

I can get with all that and a good burger or a few of them instead of possibly wasting my money on maybe dodgy AV software when malware is the more pervasive threat vector now anyway !
