Thanks DooGie :) Just so you know, one of my other paid ones is ..... SuperAntiSpyware bought it also long time ago, has lifetime license. :) Take Care, Mike :)
Yes I bought my SuperAntiSpyware license when you got a lifetime one. Always good to keep around and run occasionally. seems to pick up more tracking cookies than anything else though. Must mean I have a clean PC :)

    Hi there.

With ANY AV software - Back tests are 100% USELESS - since a new threat may appear at any time rendering past results meaningless.

Personally I rely on Windows defender and BRAIN - and have never had a problem -- if you however want to install these things then by all means do so -- however please don't be influenced by analytical tests or comparison tests published in magazines or online -- these are all OUT OF DATE by the time you read them - remember a new threat could appear at ANY time where a recommended product doesn't pick it up and one lower down the chain does.

Actually more people tend to use other things for surfing such as tablets / phones etc these days so when they are actually USING their main computers it's probably for things like streaming / Office work etc so the chances of it becoming infected are far less these days.

I'd be more concerned with things Software can't control -- for example "Subscription Traps" -- even when you buy something with Amazon - be very careful what you click - you might find your self saddled with an unwanted subscription to Amazon Prime for example (approx. 85 EUR / USD) even if you only wanted one 3 USD cable !!! and it's a real pain to get rid of it. No AV software can help against those types of things.

I'm not sure what protection ANDROID has but it seems that with the number of Android devices in daily use there aren't many reports of people needing or even using AV software on Android. Of course "In App purchases" is a trick to get people to part with their money or people who give out passwords / other info on the net but AV software can't really help against that.

I don't believe these days that Windows is really so fundamentally "insecure" compared with Android (or other Linux distros in general) as the whole nature of OS'es has come a long way since the early versions of Windows and online threats were essentially unknown -- however again it's up to you - but watch out for SCAMS which part you from your money - these can only be stopped by using BRAIN rather than relying on AV software for protection.

    Cheers
    jimbo
Haven't had any problems with Amazon Prime here presently on the trial that got extended for an additional when an order was late! After that order for an 18650 flashlight battery put on credit was found to have been a Chinese seller explaining the delay! Their service at least domestically here has been very good.

As for Windows Defender that offers a degree of local on pc type protection while not an effective prevention mechanism. Once the av software here was shutdown for the 4-5hrs. in order to work with install.esd file conversion WD should have flagged but didn't the bug that went on like a regular software installer. The web filtering included in the "paid for" type softwares however would have screened the source site before it even got on. The one time the av is left off "SURPRISE!"...

In your case you haven't actually been running the same type of web searches or have been running into the same sites otherwise you would have had a few already. And as for reviews you can find any for any program that put a particular program as Uno Numero #1 Top Choice and then next review will have McA Fail listed as #1 and next Kaspersky or some other program which is why I mentioned before I never even go by the reviews but by what works here. Apparently you found what works for you there.

So someone says Android is the worst for Malware -- can't say I've noticed a load of people complaining about their phones being riddled with malware and I haven't seen any "Chapter and Verse " references to people with a load of Android infections. Getting caught by SCAMS is a different matter entirely though.
I've read articles on ZDNet (and other places) talking about Android malware.
I suspect that it is mostly Trojan Apps.

Until recently, I don't recall seeing many articles about iPhone malware.
There were plenty about various iPhone construction/design issues.

I don't have a Smart Phone, so I've never seen any Android or iOS malware.

OTOH, I haven't seen any actual malware on my XP & W7 installs for a long time (2+ years?).

Since we were just talking about safe surfing a while ago, this one makes a good example:

Now you see why investing in "Prevention" not local detection once infected with something is why anyone would shop for a retail program that sees regular support with continually updated definitions coming in. Running multiple programs can only go so far since things are not insync while having a single program that will offer more options often will see better results.

Keeping a good firewall as well as web security in place are the two strong points to be looking at to "avoid" not "wait until" to find out how good any program is. The $120 paid here provided 5 pcs a full 10yrs. of protection compared to spending $40 or so every second year to renew a subscription or buy new again.

The only reason I was even to see the malware app slip on the other day was simply from having any web filtering or firewall running when going to run a web search. So even when having an effective protection you can still get zinged at times! The av side locally only found traces and even named what to look for while later found in the Programs & Features where you look for any regular program.

The Softpedia report there is actually a good example of how malware writers are getting even more clever on how they operate! There's big money involved these days!

PC World just had a recent security article that offers a few other suggests. That gets into the Tor project and cloaking your browser as well as encrypting communications and being more or less proactive. Online privacy: 3 ways to ward off cyber criminals and snoops | PCWorld

What then is the reason you have backups if not to recover your missing/damaged files after a virus/malware attack. I'm missing something obviously.
Reasons for backups? CPU failure, mem failure, HDD failure, Power supply failure, etc, etc,. All real threats to your data, and probably more common than Virus attacks!

You could use the inbuilt facility "OneDrive" for backups....that is assuming you are not a member of the TFH brigade.

I totally agree and I backup things to Google.drive. It's the best way I think to make sure your data is backed up.

    Just my 2c..
