I gave up on all those before the Bing search was even out! The IE toolbars were supposed to but didn't as well as the Crawler Security toolbar filter bad sites out. Sadly the same toolbar options generally will tend to leave browser whether IE or other open for exploits!

Not having web filtering which can actually hitting bad sites however leaves you with cleaning after an incident not preventing one! Early on for Bing while still testing 7 years back I ran right into a Whamy on the search results when going to look something up. One of the first sites in the search results "saw ya comin"! when lowering the boom on you. Web filtering and considering a good firewall will be more of a plus factor in the long run then the av program used for clean up after the fact.
FWIW I use the Windows firewall and mbam real time anti exploit web shield and whatever my router RGW has aside from the free resident AV or Win Defender and mbam scanners but none of that adware /spyware cleaner junk I think is useless anyway after using some of it .I think a lot of that just tries to scare U with false positives or falsely designating harmless threats ,pups & cookies as something worse than they are .

At that time I was still running a G type router as well as the free AVG without any web protection and the firewall was off as well as the UAC when hit by the what turned to be a minor bug. The fact was however I knew then that active web shield would be what had to sought when finally going to replace AVG a year later upon looking back at that. The people riding by could get free WiFi access with that one which lacked any firewall option. That was bought back then simply to have more RJ-45s ports available when going to hook up some other case I would be looking at.

Other then that one incident I have several people running VIPRE here without any data miners or other bugs to speak of now for some time. So far the investment has actually paid for itself.

FWIW PC Magazine aint liking 2016 Vipre ThreatTrack a lot but they like AVG and Avast & some others usually

"ThreatTrack Vipre Antivirus 2016, isn't your best choice for comprehensive protection. It did improve its anti phishing and malicious URL blocking scores significantly over the tests we ran on last year's edition, but it fared poorly in tests by independent antivirus labs." -PC Magazine-

    ThreatTrack Vipre Antivirus 2016 Review & Rating | PCMag.com

FWIW I'm still running an ATT&T ( Comcast of the sky now ) U -Verse Pace 3801 802.11g FTTN RGW@18Mbps and it can do 2 1080P /5.1 HD streams and one PC or PS3 on Wi Fi at the same time without any problems .

OFC the new 4K Sony WCG HDR TV set next to me in here would probably like at least 25 Mbps for 4K /4K HDR iptv all by itself but it's geting fed mostly 1080p for it's embedded & D/L Android TV apps and the Roku for now untill there is enough UHD content to justify a speed bump when it'as not on Dish TV,OTA ,BD ,it's external hdd or the PC extended screen duty here .1080p upscaled to 4K Sony Style here looks better than 1080p on my 1080p 64f8500 Sammy Plasma out front and that' s saying a ton and my 4K and 4K HDR D/L 's are even better .

No malware in the Android TV yet but :

That's the ThreatTrack review not the GFI review. First VIPRE was Sunbelt until GFI bought it out. ThreatTrack is something new and got a hold of it. The 2014 version on the 7 side of the dual boot here still the GFI being supported however being under the lifetime license.

The thing to know about reviews however is that these companies tell reviewers "make us look good" or are biased often by blogger opinions. And you will note that generally it's the same brands in most cases being reviewed. I never even bother with many reviews but go by what I see in actual use! Anything can clean up text cookies!

Doesn't matter 2 me what U use just because I never heard of it or GFI but they were talking about Vipre whatever .. maybe not GFI .

I'm just passing along what they said at PC Mag about the 2016 Vipere version ( I thought you mentioned Vipre so I googled it ) that's all and they were citing independent tests also and didn't like the 2014 or 2016 Vipre.product ..and we don't know if they were getting paid or admonished for deliberate bias one way ay or another or they bought retail ......everybody Thinks what they use is the best anyway if it works for them that's human nature and nobody has ever proved that PC mag gets paid or admonished or any of the usual allegations out there on a lot of other reviews outside some of the Amazon stuff but it's not impossible and I'm sure it can happen but TBH outside of the GFI thing Is paying for antivirus a waste of money?-63762880.jpg

I forgot to add my new Sony android 4K TV has Google Chrome and Google voice search and an Opera browser and Netflix and Amazon etc,etc lots of android apps ,Wifi ,ethernet and a 3Tb External NTFS Seagate USB hdd I bought for it . You can side load a lot of Android stuff in it also ( outside of the Google Play Store Sony Android TV apps ) including file explorers, some other stuff and Kodi like I did if U know how .

The long and short of it is you can plug in a USB mouse, keyboard and printer or bluetooth all that and use it like a Chromebook or Android PC and it has built in Chromecast also and you can pair a smartphone or tard pad with it and DTV box or any number of things including home automation and security but no anti virus AFAIK and I have Google Play Store ,Vudu ,Amazon Prime and maybe some other PWL info in it hopefully it's all encrypted ☻☻

Back then I had never even heard of it either while I did hear about Sunbelt. They were high rated for their antispyware/antiadwares programs before they got into the av market. That's when GFI came in and bought them out. Sunbelt Firewall was another one with a rep back before GFI came along as well. Here's an old 2008 Softpedia review on that one. Sunbelts New Firewall

CounterSpy was another one by Sunbelt before VIPRE came along. And once again you only looked at PC Mag's review while others say differently. The early review put VIPRE when first seen as the updated av if you want look just at one program only. PC Antivirus Reviews has something else as well. Editor's Choice Award Winner of 2016 Antivirus Software | PC Antivirus Reviews

The first thing that stood out for VIPRE was speed! The software could easily run in the background and not chomp down on resources like the older softwares when first seen. Later other companies followed up on that. Another tull review can be seen at VIPRE Antivirus 2016

But like I was saying before I only invested in the lifetime license from how it has been performing here. As far as the two supposedly bad points which is quite a contrast in comparison to others like McA foo...

    Bad points

    • Lengthy scanning times
    • Annoying update notification pop-ups
As for how long the scans are that will depend on which scan option is being referred to there as well as with any other av program as far as quick scan, full scan, scheduled scan, or Deep system scan. You hardly ever see popups for updates unless like the 2016 going on to replace the 2015 as with any other av program the older is first uninstalled to allow the newer to go on.

I never do anything like that for lifetime though because things can change in a minute and I won't pay for AV stuff these days I don't need to YMMV .

This box just has Windows defender mbam and mbam anti exploit on both W10 OS and it works ( for me ) and I never read a review on mbam anti exploit maybe nobody likes it for good reasons for all I know. I just got it because mbam is the defacto malware scanner out there .

That's all good if it all works for you and 2 different webzines can have differing reviews. I Just casually looked at one of the mainstream consumer PC websites.and it was Vipre maybe not the other one you have .

I Like to look at independant tests and data myself even on TV's even though on an LCD TV set (for me ) it's a given I'm buying Sony XBR anyway and if they ever do OLED likely one of those if I want to go OLED which at this point is unlikely it's not what it needs to be yet (for me ) with LG IMO but it's very good for folks in darker rooms.

Even though Seagate HDD's been having some issues and getting trashed here and there I buy them like always and they seem just as good as anthing else usually faster than most metal (for me ) and ( they all fail at some point if U keep them long enough )

I have an AMD K10 and 3 Intel PC 's and outside of the SB i7 desktop with a stonking game d/GPU playing 1080p ultra game settings they all work fine and the AMD K10 feels just as good as the 2 SB i7 Intel's on normal use but the reviewers like the Intels and most folks can be fine with a decent AMD even an older 4 core K10 .

    Hi there.

With ANY AV software - Back tests are 100% USELESS - since a new threat may appear at any time rendering past results meaningless.

Personally I rely on Windows defender and BRAIN - and have never had a problem -- if you however want to install these things then by all means do so -- however please don't be influenced by analytical tests or comparison tests published in magazines or online -- these are all OUT OF DATE by the time you read them - remember a new threat could appear at ANY time where a recommended product doesn't pick it up and one lower down the chain does.

Actually more people tend to use other things for surfing such as tablets / phones etc these days so when they are actually USING their main computers it's probably for things like streaming / Office work etc so the chances of it becoming infected are far less these days.

I'd be more concerned with things Software can't control -- for example "Subscription Traps" -- even when you buy something with Amazon - be very careful what you click - you might find your self saddled with an unwanted subscription to Amazon Prime for example (approx. 85 EUR / USD) even if you only wanted one 3 USD cable !!! and it's a real pain to get rid of it. No AV software can help against those types of things.

I'm not sure what protection ANDROID has but it seems that with the number of Android devices in daily use there aren't many reports of people needing or even using AV software on Android. Of course "In App purchases" is a trick to get people to part with their money or people who give out passwords / other info on the net but AV software can't really help against that.

I don't believe these days that Windows is really so fundamentally "insecure" compared with Android (or other Linux distros in general) as the whole nature of OS'es has come a long way since the early versions of Windows and online threats were essentially unknown -- however again it's up to you - but watch out for SCAMS which part you from your money - these can only be stopped by using BRAIN rather than relying on AV software for protection.

    Cheers
    jimbo
