You pulled the tickertape style printer off to insert the microcassette tape drive to store the programs you had to write up! Some pre-written programs that came on tape some included with the model others bought separately while you had to take care of the rest. Epson HX-20 computer

That was in the stores back in 1982 for a history lesson while we are looking at the present where viruses, malwares, and other things have to be watched out for. As for bias I would have to it isn't simply av programs since any can still clean things up after the fact but the more full feature suits that offer quite a bit more as far as retail products are concerned that offer prevention as well as protection.

With an effective web filtering that will detect malicious coding and block sites out you never arrive at one to contract any bugs to begin with. Other options like disabling scripts can help but in turn make things a bit more awkward for the majority.

I never disputed the *possibility that malware web filtering may be a benefit* to some users including myself but again only if it recognizes and blocks the exploit which is likely at best a 50-50 proposition

Presumably anybody on this forum would know not to confuse trojan virus etc. with malware and would at least consider a malware web filter and maybe malwarebytes free or at least one or the other in addition to any resident program anti virus protection they choose free or otherwise .

Lastly lets entertain the likely proposition that you been at this longer than me and your information on the current state of the art for Windows Defender specific to Windows 10 and recent free Avast and free AVG product is out of your wheelhouse because maybe you are stuck in the past how about that

It's now simply malware web filtering but malicious coding of sites! Sometimes the filtering may even pick up on a scam site if things were that well hidden. What I was looking for back then however wasn't just simply any addon tool bar like the Crawler web security toolbar for IE but what would be included in the new av software. The firewall option had to be a bit more effective then that seen in Windows as well. Too many bugs are designed to work around the protections already in Windows making them rather useless and obsolete too soon! The latest chatbot by MS being hacked on the spot is a clear indication that something else may be needed.

Now you're talking! Bring in the caterers too! Actually I think I have just about every aspect already covered anyways! Initially it was finding a program worth bothering with let alone paying out for subscriptions.

Solution that works here? Found! For the next user in line? That's on their head which way they go! It's still a risk game anyways whenever you are out on the web to start with.

Good that will allow others to offer some input from what they have observed on finding out what works for them! For each the experiences will generally tend to vary anyways! Some can go years without anything since they rarely do any general web browsing while others at times will do some extensive web searches and that's when you are likely to get zinged when hitting a bad site during a search far more frequently!

Try the Pacific Ocean! We'll simply let someone else go there looking however! That second reference back on Post #238 was prepared by those who are responsible for security and provide some rather basic steps anyone can follow in order to tighten things up on their own personal systems regardless of what protections they have on.

Getting back to the original article however the question was raised as to whether or not buying a retail program is worth something compared to someone simply jumping at free stuff typically found on the web? Just remember that some of that free stuff may be loaded with bugs! Been there enough times where the software here flagged a number of utility downloads for having unwanted extras!

But as far as this becoming only two sided I think others may want to have a chance to offer what they think about the original question itself.
