Well I got a lot of Viruses even with Windows Defender running on my office machines. But avast! Free antivirus does work for me nicely.

I've had good luck with Avast and AVG free and have used both since win XP I'm using AVG free this year on 3 Win 10 PC's and Windows 10 Defender on this one dual booting Win10 10586 and 14291 . I also use mbam Anti exopit real time web protection and Chrome default browsers.

In the past prior to windows 10 IE seemed to let the most toolbar and search engine hijackers get in and even some nasty malware on two occasions on another PC here on 7 x645 and even once or twice with harmless toolbar hijacker in Windows 10 specific IE 11 even though IE11 in win.10 tests better than other IE 11 versions . I've been using Chrome for a default browsers for eons although Firefox Is real decent also and IIRC Chrome doesn't allow third party Toolbars *anymore and Edge may not likewise .

I've read that Edge may even be more secure than Win 10 specific IE 11 which is scoring pretty well in browser security testing just behind Chrome x64 .... depending on which test you read .

I use Win defender & mbam anti exploit web shield on the Windows insider builds & 10586 I use for this dual boot daily driver partly because even Avast Free and AVG free impact start up time /resources and memory significantly more than Win Defender for Win 10 .

The rest of the family gets AVG free ( with win defender [off ] ) and mbam anti exploit for some extra protection and of course all 4 of the Win 10 PC's here have the free mbam malware scanner.

Setting the paid AV programs aside It seems like Avast and AVG free trade the higher of the two in independent testing in any given year and right now IIRC AVG is above Avast currently but either one is probably fine IMO .

I'm not about the big paid premium AV suite bloatware programs after using premium CrApafee a while back in Win 7 x64 when my ISP was giving it for free and Norton for short a while before that in 7 x64 and XP ( both were lots of problems and resource hogs back then . ) although some folks like those things and the vendors claim the current ones are better resource wise YMMV.

The thing between our ears is also very important to use correctly on the web and in E mail clients and webmail nothing is foolproof .

Where your office folks surfing or torrenting when they supposed to be working ...... ? maybe you need to lock them down with no BYOD policies ,some filters and or web use policies that include the phrase" up to and including termination "and randomly audit thier web histories periodically (all this like some 500 companies do )

Now you are "Hitting the Nail on the Head" as far as why someone would invest in a better software over simply running freebies especially when digging for information deeper into the web searches to come up with results where you are often at higher risks of running into some very nasty sites waiting for you out there! The simple fact that I ran into the latest bug was simply not being able to count on WD for much when that lacks web filtering as well as not having had the Windows firewall on.

As far as the free versions of av programs it still comes down to the av sweep is done after the fact when the bubble is already burst! ut oooooohhh.... ! That ounce of prevention then starts to make much more sense in the long term! "ok new daddy!"

FWIW Setting aside regular back ups , real time web & email malware /virus protection (free or paid ) There are no guarantees or any statistically valid proof that paid AV suites as a rule offer any better virus /malware protection than the *better* free ones especially depending on which tests you read and that could equally apply to modern browsers security and free or paid real time web malware protection.

OTOH I would agree WD may not offer as much protection as Avast or AVG free or some paid stuff and Windows Firewall [on] and decent real time web protection however you can get it are both prudent .

i.e,nothing is foolproof & people are often foolish.

You ever been on the deep web aka dark web ?

Sounds like a broken record there! For actual proofs you again would need to see the actual inside reports these companies have from their own professional teams as well as the independent security companies who do look into things before advising a client which to go with!

That type information isn't what you would typically expect to see published in the general consumer market however. But I think what you would be able to learn from tight lip sealed security analysis reports would likely make you hair stand on end when trying to advise freewares! The vast differences seen right there is that these companies can bankroll for the best security and why the av companies as well as for other software developers can toss the lower end stuff at the average user.

I'm not advising freeware you are missing my point I'm saying what works *for me*on 4 PC's here and stating my opinions and experiences at home that's all ....

You got it all wrong about me *specifically recommending anything paid or free* that's up to anyone's free choice I Just stated my opinions and personal experiences regarding all this

Prominent IT people ,I'm related to and I know and used to work with at fortune 200 multinationals before I retired from one are OK with my configurations anyway although admittedly they are not the strongest things out there that's all true . Nothing is wrong with looking at independant tests and making a choice annually or as needed that's maybe a reasonable plan .

Nobody needs to copy me without being decently informed of the risks IMO i.e, do so and assume the risk

A remote Android hacking exploit named Stagefright — also known as Metaphor — has arrived and because of it, millions of Android devices are directly under threat. If you are an Android user, you should be careful about it. Know how this works and how easily it can hack an Android phone in just ten seconds.
For all those who think they are safer using hand held devices they might want to think again? Metaphor -- Heres How This Remote Android Exploit Hacks Your Phone In 10 Seconds

What about an encrypted iPHone like the FBI is raising cain about ?

Although I have an Android phone I don't use it to pay for anything or any bills either I even pay the Telco or get any apps with this PC here .

I even side load Android apps outside of the Google Play Store ,Sony TV compatible apps into the TV with this PC

I don't much like anything with a smartphone outside of a picture or GPS or phone call or SMS text when I have 3 desktops and one Elitebook and Andoid TV which may present some vulnerabilities also

.I'm also careful about redirects *(and often google for a legit link or use one of my bookmarks if I want to move in that direction ) and also URL overlays links or anthing slightly unusual or different that may appear legit or not that's old news to me but otherwise your link may be a good read for all of us with Android Devices you never know when you might click on the bogey man especially if Android is being slow and or unstable and U in a hurry ☻☻

You obviously know the hackers are going to migrate to wherever thay can make a buck or at the least cause disruption or steal data to sell you might be on the cusp of something here I wouldn't doubt it at all ☻☻ .
