Funny that Windows 98 is being compared alongside dialup. We had high-speed cable in 1999 at my apartment, when I adopted 98 SE, and I used TCP optimization programs to improve flow (since the IP stack was definitely optimized for PPP). But I never used dial-up much with 98 or ME.
Had to use dial-up all kinds as cable internet was not available in our suburb until about September 2000. Not long after it was available in our neighborhood we got pamphlets in the mail and switched. I believe even the max available was 3/256k for $40/month and not sure if we paid a modem fee or not.
Regardless I remember a Rogers tech doing the line install to the room where we had the modem because being 2001 only 1 computer and modem next to computer hooked up via ethernet card (that was purchased as an add-on) we were told by Rogers we could use USB if I remember but ethernet was a better alternative and had to speak to a tech rep over the phone to install the CD and configure the computer for use with Rogers Cable and Windows 98SE.
After upgrading to XP I think in 2004 it was plug and play internet after that, no more setup. Not sure if I had to run a Rogers setup with W2000
Yeah I had Cogeco Cable in Stoney Creek. We had the Samsung modem with the green LEDs on the front via ethernet. I think I had just about 1 mbps in 1999, and yes only 256 kbps upload. A lot of the DSL modems the Bell put in were those USB modems. Yecchhh!
W10 marketshare numbers are not great, but they are not bad either. All new PCs now come with 10 installed plus the heavy push from MS and I think it will be at least 20% in a year.
I have 4 Windows 10 10586 th2 normally activated PC's here now including this one dual booting with 14279rs1 I use for the daily driver on 14279rs1 or the current fast ring build with backup ofc and Google Chrome default browsers .
I'm OK with Windows 10. I started off with DOS back in the day at home up to Windows 10 now and Unix then Unix Solaris at work then SAP on Unix before I retired . I have Linux Ubuntu at home also on a dual boot Win10 /nix box.
I don't use nix much although it does a lot of things very well including the nix drive tools ,file and data recovery from a borked Windows HDD that wont load the OS . ☻
The only thing here is the last two or more Insider test builds hang now and then in the e mail client /web mail and web browsing so there must be some stability things going on and this latest build (14279 ) hangs more frequent than some of the others .
PS if anybody finds a perfect PC OS & web browser let me know and it ain't OS X or MS Edge !
My favorite win OS are Win 7 x64 sp1 and Windows 10 YMMV
