That is what MS is claiming.

If it is true, why isn't this forum overrun with 100s (if not 1000s) of users complaining about not being able to set defaults?
It's not every app that does it. It's only a select few that are codded poorly. From what I understand anyway. If you never installed any of those Apps you don't have an issue. Plus it would only be the default type for that one App, say music. Not every default being locked. I've seen some repots on the Microsoft Community Forum. It was mentioned in the Microsoft MVP Yammer group too I think. I don't like having my defaults reset either, but I get why they did it. Hopefully its not going to be very often that they do this. It will get old real fast having to go back in and change them every time you apply a big update.

    If it happens after every:
    • W10 upgrade, it will be annoying
    • W10 update (e.g. Defender, security fix, etc.) it will be ridiculously obnoxious

Strangely enough, when I installed the latest cumulative update yesterday (after restoring a recent image), none of my default app settings were changed at all, they remained as I had set them. So I'm not sure what to make of that....
    Mine didn't get changed either.
Another mystery where certain computers get affected and others don't even with the same version.

Upgrades will reset the defaults every time but updates like Defender don't effect the settings at all.

Non of mine changed either. I think it only resets if your one of the ones with a corrupted registry from one of those poorly written apps.

I agree. For an upgrade to a new build it's a pretty well a given it's going to happen. Any more frequent than that and its going to be a PITA.

It doesn't .. when I get defender updates or basic updates there are no changes to the settings.

I haven't had any resets other than when upgrading to a new build. So far anyway.

Same here.. and I have a list written down so when I do get an update I can quickly reset my anything to what I want it to.
