You can even lose the backups, so what's te point? Sysprem and imagex/dism are your friends, so you can create an installer image with all of your inportant applications (and Windows updates). For the user data: Separate disks/partitions are just enough, however I just keep everything on the same partition. Still no problem, if I just dirty-install the OS (that is without formatting), because I will still have my files. Only viruses/hardware problems can cause trouble in this case (Yeah, and in some cases the "clean" command in diskpart)
