I agree - but finding the right distro took me 2 years. It is now Mint Mate. It is a superb OS.
Linux Mint now out for about 5yrs. or so took an immediate liking to many since it was made to be more appealing to the Windows user to get more to try the other OS out. Ubuntu while small and not as airy as a few others like Suse even had always been favored while LM offers the ubuntu or Debian based releases. The ubuntu side however is the more full featured as well as easiest to use that most will go for while Debian(LMDE=Linux Mint Debian Edition) can be more of a challenge there and why that will see the recommendation for advanced user.

Yeah , thats a definite negative .
Don't forget that you don't have to install Linux Distros to try them out.
You can run a lot of Linux Distros from a Live CD/DVD/USB.
Linux Mint 17.3 MATE runs smoothly on my PCs.

I wouldn't agree that Ubuntu (with Unity) is easier to use than Linux Mint MATE.
I dropped Ubuntu when they introduced Unity and from what I've been told it hasn't really improved that much.
My friend has used Linux for ~16 years and he hates Unity.
Linux Mint MATE is very similar to W7 (traditional desktop UI with windows and menus, not a Touch UI).

Linux Mint has two options for the base as far as which distro the download you get will be compatible with. If you select the LMDE option found on a different download page you end up with the Debian edition which takes some practice with Debian in general. The usual download most simply go with is the ubuntu based version of LM which has the obvious compatibility with ubuntu which before the arrival of Linux Mint was deemed about the easiest or of the few easiest distros to work with.
The Knoppix Live for CD and later as that grew in size Live for DVD releases are all live Debian there yet had been recommended for live data recovery already being an only live OS to begin with. One guide did instruct on how to unpack the live iso onto a flash drive to make it a little more like a custom install while still being live from usb instead. At this time however ubuntu seems to have gone off in a slightly different direction from where it had making it the better recommendation to point someone to Linux Mint instead.

It's really quite amazing that anyone would celebrate W-10 overtaking XP. Really
If anything it should be an embarrassment for Microsoft that anyone is still running XP especially considering W-10 is supposedly the greatest OS ever assembled and is being given away free for many. Microsoft may very well move on from past disasters but will have a hard time equaling or surpassing past success without strong-armed tactics.
