Now this is interesting and I congratulate you for having done all the required tuning. But can that be expected from an average user. An OS has to be optimal out of the box. I can tune any OS because I have developed those systems for more than 30 years. But I refuse to do so. If they are no good out of the box, I look for something else..

    Agree 110% .

    Conflicting numbers from StatCounter:

This is right from the StatCounter web site and anyone can do this for verification.

Two graphs using the same data points, a line graph and a bar graph and they show significantly different results.

Can't explain this but regardless of the timeframe chosen the difference between the two graphs is significant. Obviously the line graph favors the adoption rate for W-10. I think NetMarketShare https://netmarketshare.com/ is a more widely recognized source for these kind of statistics but considering they each use a different methodology it is likely appropriate to average the two.

I would tend to question some of the numbers from StatCounter because I believe it has been widely accepted that W-7 still holds a better than 50% share worldwide and greater than 55% prior to the W-10 release.

I really have a hard time to make out the nums on the line graph.

Agreed. That's why I prefer bar graphs for these types of comparisons. If you go directly to the StatCounter page the line graph should be the first thing you see. http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-ww-monthly-201507-201601

The line chart shows change over time whilst the bar chart just shows the average over time, (IOS is an irrelevant entry without showing Android so should be ignored. ) the line is more useful to show trends but it does take a little more work to read

This is based of course on net access so will not show those business systems that never access the internet, so the real figure for XP will probably be higher if you take into account this and the embedded systems

10 raises simple because of forced upgrades and inability to revert back easily.
The title should be: 7 has more users than all other OS combined, that says something.

Actually I don't see why anyone would consider Android to be a valid operating system. unfortunately I have an android phone and an android tablet. Android 4.4 kit kat has come a long way from android 2.2 but it is no where near as user friendly or stable as ios.

I questioned why IOS was included in the graph when android was not when android vastly outsells IOS

Apple IOS appears to have reached it's level and indeed is starting to lose sales to Android, the latest versions are stable and fully functional and the handsets do not break easily in use

Personally I think that without Steve Jobs, Apple's decline will be similar to what It was when Jobs left before to innovate other projects, (to the extent that they had to go cap in hand to Bill gates for a handout to keep running ), they seem to have nobody there to innovate any more, a lot of the recent "new" features have been available from other manufactures for a long time. I've spoken to many Die Hard Apple Iphone users who are switching to either Android or even Windows Phones to get the latest features

The real question is, how many small and large businesses are not upgrading due to proprietary software.

Not much chance of that happening, unless MS starts forcibly installing W10 on people's W7 PCs.

W10 hasn't overtaken the W8 series yet, despite the fact that most Windows users despise the W8 series.
Probably more so than Vista, given that the W8 series never even gained as a large a market share as Vista managed.

I also found it strange that Android was not mentioned.

    The numbers don't make sense:

How come the iOS and W10 percentages aren't closer?
In fact, why doesn't iOS have a larger share?

Surely there are more iPhone users than Mac users.

    NetMarketShare has significantly different numbers.
