that is my point... windows 10 is great but it still has its issues, you would think that by now Microsoft would have gotten rid of it by building the os on a unix core like apple did. unix in unbreakable, but far too expensive for a single user to get

My take on it is this. The market share Apple is not large enough to make it profitable for hackers to attack the OS at this point. It takes time and effort to develop virus and malware and if there is no pay back then no one will put in that effort. While with Windows there are more users and the cost befit favors attacking those machines. Overall you can get by with Defender and not have any real issues. I use Avira free and I don't have any issues with it.

And putting an SSD will definitely be a major improvement and you can schedule the clean up so it's no longer necessary to do that manually.
Maybe you all haven't heard but yes, Apple's OS does have virus/malware exposure. New virus created that can completely wreck Apple computers RT USA

My only issue with Windows 10 security is that the best security is available for the Enterprise version. They should offer those features in every version. Also, the standard Windows 10 version has a built in anti-virus. How good/bad it is is up for debate.

So Macs still transmit viruses, I thought they would have made it more secure by eliminating these things by now

Mac user receives an email with a virus ridded attachment
Mac user get nothing from this as the virus doesn't affect the OS
Mac user emails document to friends and infects there PC's with viruses

I recall a discussion I had with a senior technician at one of the UK's largest internet providers - although apple systems accounted for less than 10% of their clients, they accounted for almost 30% of the fault reports. Of course this was a few years ago - PC's are more reliable these days and the percentage of Mac users is back to it's proper level of less than 5%

that is true mac's can transmit viruses... but that is not something that really ever concerned me. as far as I am concerned that would be on the end user to have their system protected if they are not using a mac

A Mac is not 100% safe. This is one example. Do I need an anti-virus program for my MacBook Pro? - Apple

I take it that Win3x and 9x were motorbikes without breaks and break lights?
