Windows 7 ENT MUST be supported until at least April of 2020 per the contract we signed for our enterprise agreement. That means full security updates from now until 2020. And then we can buy more support after that if we so choose.
Then do so. This is only a forum to discuss things.

There is no point saying Microsoft MUST do this or MUST do that. It is only up to you and them.

You have 1700 seats you said so if they think it is worth it changing direction I'm sure they'll accommodate you.

Not sure where you got that number. We have a lot more than 1700 seats. A lot more. We probably have 1700 server licenses alone :)

I believe some of the more recent posts only apply to large corporations that have the resources to maintain their own computing ecology, like a Windows XP computing ecology behind a beefy corporate firewall that requires an IT army to maintain, and $$$ for special security and other patches from Microsoft.

That's far from typical for even medium sized businesses of say 100 people. They don't have that kind of resources to maintain their own computing ecology. They will have to move along with MS' roadmap and then the blog post does apply to them, it is not just some hot air to wave away.

Not that the roadmap means immediate hardship, 2020/2023 is still 4/7 years out. But it does take two to tango and you better pay attention to what your tango partner is or will be doing, especially if your tango partner is an elephant

My roomie works for one of MS largest users of Windows at least they were 2 years ago, and it has only been, just recently that they got everyone switched over to Windows 7. He says there is not a chance in hell, of them switching for a very, very long time. With concerns to licensing fees, and since all of their software is custom, he thinks they may be looking at Linux, apparently a vast majority of their servers already run Linux. Plus, get this, they are supplying their Medical staff and doctors (it is an HMO), with iPads and iPhones for remote access, go figure.
It's easier to move your infrastructure from Windows 7 to Windows 10 then to move from Windows 7 to Linux. Whether their code is custom or not it's designed to run in Windows not Linux.

Everytime we buy any new hardware - it's immediately wiped and Windows 7 ENT is placed on it. Does not matter what it shipped with.

Well it does matter because eventhough you install your Windows 7 image you purchased a Windows 10 license with the PC. At least that's how it works with my company.

We have full downgrade rights on our ENT agreement. We could roll the whole company back to NT 4.0 if we wanted to :)
