Thanks for the article.
Read more: Windows crosses landmark build number: 10,000 - NeowinFor decades, Microsoft has been compiling builds of Windows with a continuous count for version control and as of today, the version number has crossed 10,000, according to sources who are close to Microsoft.
This does not necessarily mean that 10,000 builds of Windows have been compiled as the company will jump version numbers around major releases but this does mean that new builds of Windows 10 going forward, will have 10XXX version numbers.
FWIW. This was probably the jump they are referring to. Even a jump back to 99xx just before the last:
- 10.0.10000.0.fbl_lad.150119-2010
- 10.0.9925.0.fbl_mobs_dev02.150119-2000
- 10.0.10000.0.fbl_ie.150119-1730
- 10.0.10000.0.fbl_photos.150119-1721
- 10.0.10000.0.fbl_outlook.150119-1721
- 10.0.9925.0.fbl_enf.150119-1700
It's strange they would jump 75 build bumbers - unless they are just testing whether that number of build digits will break anything.
I don't think they have jumped them. Many builds are internal, possibly on minor issues, which are not in the published sequence.
