    Thank you Mark Phelps

Well .. I DON'T! Because ... they're getting there by tricking Win7 and Win8 folks into applying an Upgrade they do not want.

The Win7 forums and OEM forums are chock full of folks complaining about HOW to get rid of Win10 and go back to their older OS -- because they did what they thought was a routine update only to have their machine upgraded to Win10.

This is reprehensible conduct by MS -- and I don't care if millions of folks like Win10, this is STILL reprehensible conduct.
Mark, you absolutely nailed this. I personally turned off all my windows 7 updates except security to avoid getting sucked into this activity. I'm not sure why Microsoft thinks pushing an upgrade to people who are not ready is in any way good marketing, or for that matter, good customer service on any level. Windows 7 is supported until 2020. I could see this sort of thing if it were the EOL for Windows 7, or they were Windows XP users. However, forcing upgrades is only going to piss people off. I feel sorry for their support staff. Personally I keep this machine on 7, but have a Windows 10 device. Once I think Windows 10 has matured enough, this will get upgraded.

While you may not appreciate some of the directions the original post has been taken. I feel valid points have been brought up to validate or not-validate the OP, this is certainly not the worst hi-jacked thread I have seen.
@dencal - sorry but I think this is a good explanation for your second to last post. Productive and interesting topics can be organic and dynamic. They change as new points of view are brought up. The thread has stayed connected to things that are topic related. You may not like where it's headed, but valid points have been brought up on both sides. I would always want to challenge figures and sales numbers and see how they merit the attention they're getting. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'm not sure why there's the need for the nasty disposition in your tone to the last two posters. They were fairly and intelligently debating points. Again, nothing wrong at with that.
    :)

Please reread again what I was agreeing to with my ditto....Do you understand the word TOPIC?
No, I don't understand the word TOPIC.
I only understand that out of 11 pages and 104 posts, there is only one person calling people with opposing views as being biased.
You started slapping label on other people, you open the door to be treated the same.

200 million holy molly! I think one of the best things that worked was the free upgrade and the different editions you can get depending on your needs (Home/Pro/Enterprise editions)

200 million is a big number. But it is less than 20% of the total Windows population.

As I stated earlier, it is all in the wording...

200 million installs, does not represent 200 million users, nor have they stated how many uninstalls there have been.

Goodness, myself alone have installed it at least 20x, but removed it 19x. I have kept only 1 for demo.

Globally, 200 million is a mere drop in the bucket! and even with the super aggressive push by MS, W-10 has garnered just around 10% of the PC installed base.

I don't believe for a moment the FREE window of opportunity will end 7/29/2016 either. It will always be in MS best interest to convert users of older versions. I envision an extension of the FREE upgrade period or at least a HUGE discount to convert users of older versions.

In Addition: How can this be? I thought W-10 was the last Windows OS

I am indeed hoping for a second free upgrade year. Windows 10, as any other OS, has much better chances to be a mature OS by then, rather than within a year.

I believe the decision on a second free upgrade year will have an economic rationale. If Microsoft can save money (less maintenance effort for older versions of Windows) then they will go for a second free upgrade year.

Regardless of less maintenance for older versions of windows I think there is an economic rational for converting older versions of windows to W-10. More telemetry with W-10 hence more advertising. You can't use Edge on older versions and MS wants to expand the Edge user base plus it costs MS nothing to allow the conversion of an older OS to W-10. MS wins when an older version converts to W-10 even if they give it away and just consider the PR benefit. If someone is running W8.1 and wants to keep it, by the time 2023 comes around they will need a new machine and by then W-10 will likely be the only Windows OS available but that is years down the road and I don't think MS will want to wait that long.

Doesn't MS give special discounts to the Education sector?
They do with Office, but only if the educational facility meets certain criteria. I have a friend who is a teacher at a "Title 1" school district. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but do know that the school district and its students are poorer than poor, and eligible to get Office free for students and teachers. That said, it looks like the requirements are pretty stringent. Go here to see the requirements: Office in Education, for Students, Teachers Schools

I haven't seen anything about free Windows for educational facilities, though. Best I can find is: Deploy Windows 10 in education - schools, tablet, PC | TechNet

I'd be surprised if universities such as Harvard, MIT, etc. would be eligible for free Windows 10; however, students would be eligible for the free upgrade the same as you or I. :)
