I agree. I only just installed Windows 10 on my tablet that was running W8.1. Coming from W7, I hated W8. But after playing around with W10, I found an appreciation for W8.1 I never knew I had. I too saw no point in upgrading to W10, except for the seeming inevitability of it. Instead of skipping ahead to 10, Microsoft really could have just polished up 8.1 a little more (maybe 8.5), but what's done is done.

I have 4 different PCs each with a different version of Windows; I figured now that TH2 is out, maybe now I should get a better feel for 10.

Ironically W10 2015 Enterprise N LTSB is pretty much the same thing in W10 dress. Damn fast too.

    Cheers,
I completely agree about W7. Windows 10 may eventually get to be what W7 was, but it's not there at the moment.

For some it isn't easy to get used to how W8 works, for others it is, but both just don't give it a shot.
I think there's some truth in that, but not completely. The transition from W7 to W8 was just not good. There was not much wrong with W7. And they took all that solid goodness and tried to force their users into a system that Microsoft unilaterally decided was better. My problem with W8 is my problem with W10- stop trying to unilaterally decide what's better or best!

It's 2015! The technology advances are amazing! Why are we being deprived of basic choices as if we're little children that don't know what's good for us? Why are we being pigeonholed into one GUI as if our computers couldn't handle 100? Why not have a Windows 7 UI for those who like 7, and Windows 8 UI for those who like 8, and a Windows 10 UI for those who like 10?

I'm giving W10 another shot (I've had TP on one of my laptops since about March and now have Pro on my tablet), but I'm holding my nose while doing it. It's not a bad operating system- it's just the same "we know what's best for you, son" attitude that irritates me. Treat us like the adults most of us are, let us make our own choices (whether to upgrade or not, which updates we want or don't want, whether we want to share telemetry data or not, what picture or color we want for our sign-in screen, etc.), and I'm pretty sure W10 would drop W7 numbers even faster.

That sounds very plausible. Those that dislike 8 likely aren't in any hurry to try 10. It's just more of the same. They will just keep using 7. Those that liked 8.1 like me, had no problem moving on to 10. That means less people still on 8/8.1. I spend most on my time on 10 forums now. I still have a look see on 8 and 7 forums but don't post near as much as I used to on those 2 forums.

I really notice the crickets chirping over at 8 Forums as well. Sad really, but I think the really active users migrated to Ten.

Sometimes, I notice new posts in the "News" sections but they're just duplicates of here. (I think they should just put stuff in the "News" that relegates to that OS, so Windows 8 Forums for example, don't contain posts about moving to 10. It should just pertain to those that want to STAY on 8 or Vista or 7.)

    Tried 10 Returned to 8.1

So the adoption growth rate for W-10 is about 1.25%/month. Considering that it is FREE along with the aggressive tactics MS is employing to facilitate conversion to W-10, I don't think the adoption rate is very impressive. IF W-10 was not offered as a FREE upgrade I suspect the adoption rate would be but a fraction of what it is currently.

As satisfied as I was with 8.1, I definitely wouldn't have upgraded to 10 if it hadn't been free. Maybe not even for the foreseeable future without concrete evidence of superiority.

    NetMarketShare has different results.
XP and OS X dropped, but the other (main) categories increased (i.e. W7, W8.1, W10 & Other).

Over and above that, and as I said before: I have a customized Windows 7 UI and a customized Windows 8.1 UI, I want those customized UIs if I upgrade my machines to Windows 10!

IMHO, upgrades to Windows 10 would accelerate too!

P.S. Business opportunity for third party UI designers.

I thought that as well for XP die-hards. They could have visual style personalities for all of the old OS appearances (even bring back classic. Why not? It's still there underneath which has been proven)

However, you may remember "eatup" who was an XP fan, and he would NOT accept such a plan. To him, all of the Component Store/Modularized systems (Vista/7/8/10) compromise on gaming performance and throughput. He won't buy any of the touted security benefit of newer systems either. So he'll stay put on XP.

    Oh well.
