Here is a quote and link to the agreement of the Insider program that we agreed to before installing Tech preview. I bolded (not in the original) the sentences I thought were important to our subject matter.

    https://insider.windows.com/Home/TermsOfUse

    Paragragh 3.4 of section 3

3.4 Open Source and Third Party Software. If the Program Services or Program Website provides any software (such as javascript) to your computer’s browser and does not include a license agreement, then Microsoft grants you the right to use that software solely to interact through your browser with this web site. If any software contains a copyright notice or similar indication of ownership that indicates it is owned by someone other than Microsoft, and it includes its own license agreement, then that software is licensed to you by that other party and not Microsoft, and Microsoft grants you no intellectual property rights (express or implied) with respect to that software. The Software may include third party programs that Microsoft, not the third party, licenses to you under this Agreement. Notices, if any, for these third party programs are included for your information only. You are solely responsible for any third party software that you install, connect, or use with any Program Service. We will not run or make any copies of such third party software outside of our relationship with you. You may only install or use third party software in a way that does not subject our intellectual property or technology to any terms governing such software. We are not a party to and are not bound by any terms governing your use of any third party software. We do not grant any licenses or rights, express or implied, to such third party software.
Reading the whole thing is important. All in all it looks to me like they can do anything they want and we agreed to it upon joining and installing, especially third party software.

Does that violate the DOJ? No, I am not trying to stir up controversy, I just want some clarification.

    Hi

I don't have an issue with Microsoft blocking Classic Shell in the preview builds.
The whole point is to get people to test the Windows interface etc.

I don't think they should block it when Windows 10 goes live.

I've found that I don't feel like I need it with Windows 10 anyway.
I've gotten used to it, and I always use RocketDock anyway, I've used it for years and it works fine with Windows 10.

    Mike
    I got a little chuckle out of your statement, when you say;
"you have gotten used to Windows 10 interface", yet...
You use RocketDock (an OSX clone). So in other words. it doesn't matter to you what Microsoft puts out? ...because you don't use it any way? ... which I have no objection too.

But this leads us back to the bigger question, is the new Windows interface, really an improvement?

The difference is that Rocketdock doesn't change the way that the Windows interface works.
I could just put all the commonly used icons on the desktop, as a lot of people I know do.

Rocketdock is just a way of organising those icons into a specific area (I do it by category,i.e. Games, Spacer, Windows tools, Spacer, Graphics Arts software, etc.) and making them open with one click, instead of three.

The opening with one click is the real reason that I use it, who wants to have to click three times on everything to open it?

The normal function of Windows 10 isn't subverted, I still use it to access all the things that aren't on Rocketdock.

    Mike
Please take no offense, I was not judging at all, and it is fine with me.

I use Start8 and with some shortcut icons that Brink gave us, I can switch to windows 10 tiled menu, or start screen or my beloved Windows 7 menu.

But, if people use all these different work-arounds, doesn't that say something about the new interface?
Again, I ask is this new interface really an improvement?

Removing the interface out of the picture, with exception to windowed apps, I don't see much else to get excited about, actually I feel at this point, Windows 10 is more difficult to use, overall.

    DOJ?
Department of Justice?? Not sure how that would violate anything???

I would think that MS can set the terms of usage for their products.

    HippsieGypsie,

U.S. Department of Justice. There was a case against Microsoft something to do with 3rd party browsers.

I know of a case that was in Europe over that but the US??
And how would that apply to use of a tool like Classic Shell?? This is beta software/OS and it's not the final product so I think you're jumping the gun on calling in the DOJ.

I think that the only time they would have a legal issue is should they go out of their way to block a particular piece of software from running on their platform for the sole reason of blocking said soft from competing with their own.

And for sure, that is a most difficult thing to prove. Not to mention prohibitively expensive....

And at any rate, that is likely not really the case in this instance.
