    Hi there.

Maybe I'm getting a bit too cynical these days - but I've installed the latest version of W10 on a few machines both as VM's and Native ones --and all I have to say on this is that this version of W10 as been the easiest and most trouble free yet --even when installing on OLDER machines.

For example on an old Sony VAIO it even found the driver for the Sony Duo memory sticks which even on W7 one had to download a driver from the Sony site.

I understand people can get all sorts of computer problems - but I can't for a minute really believe that W10 (latest build) has anything like the number of problems reported on these sites -- yes there are issues in the way Ms is distributing updates etc - but for a HUGE number of people who are running (legally) W10 FREE (I've got about 9 copies) it is on the whole is remarkably trouble free. There are still a few niggles - that's always to be expected - but I for one am quite statisfied with the current state of play of W10.

I hope soon to be able to ditch my W7 stuff - the last issue I had was connecting via Citrix (ugh !!!!) to a corporate VM to their W7 VDI's -- working now on W10 --finally) -- I have to keep an XP VM though --that will stay for a long time yet as I have some old hardware that is still making me money (cutting VINYL records for people) and I don't need to spend a load of dosh n new hardware for that purpose.

    Cheers

Are you signed up to receive Insider Preview or other MSDN or TechNet builds? It likely does if from one of those sources and not the TH2 release.

Couldn't agree more! The upgrades turn out to be a bit more stable and far less buggy then you would expect with the primary 10240 release back in July! So far between VM and the physical upgrades on two separate machines equalling 6 total 1 Home edition upgrade over clean VM install all have come out in working order The pull of the TH2 build off of the 10 download pages was apparently from the reported freeze during upgrade bug being reported and fixed as well a seeing the latest security patch added in on top.

Since MS claims to be wanting to see 10 made the best ever version they apparently did learn a little from 7 huge success in the past years while flopping on 8 big time for many! So if you put more effort into something from the start typically you usually will tend to see better end results.

Upon seeing 10 was going to work out here I simply made the decision to add 10 onto the rooster along with keeping 7 going as well and will end up with a permanent dual boot at least until the next build comes along. I may end strictly 10 or the next there while I could still see 7 transferred having keys for both. As i had mentioned earlier things are gong well as far as simply seeing the next newer version this time a 3 version leap however go on without a hassle! Most everything I run went right on if not needing a newer version of same onto an OS turning out to be stable as well as agreeable.

The 44% bug - MS Yet to Fix Windows 10 Nov. Update Installation Issues

    Known issues

First of all, there’s the issue that causes the install to freeze at 44 percent, with Microsoft advising users to remove microSD cards from their devices and then try again. And yet, this doesn’t work for many users.

“My computer (Acer Iconia W510) was getting stuck at 44% of Windows 10, 1511 installation when microSD card was inserted as well. However, even if I removed the card and waited for about half an hour, the installation didn't go further. I had to turn off and on the computer to let rollback system worked,” one user whose computer got impacted by the problem explained.
“I have the 44% bug- but with a difference. I do not have an SD card in the system that fails and initially I was not using a USB stick for the install. I then tried a 4GB USB stick and the result was the same, but when I tried to use a 32GB USB stick for the upgrade the install froze at 55% not at 44%. The computer has an internal 240GB SSD with the OS on it- it has 104GB free- together with a 3TB hard drive with 2TB free,” another user said.
For the moment, the only way to install November Update if it doesn’t show up in Windows Update is to use the Media Creation Tool to force the install process, but Microsoft recommends everyone to wait in order to avoid any potential problem that might arise.

I see these reports all the time and have to laugh out loud since it was the first day the 10240 was out I ran into not being able to get 10 to go on at all until looking over the installation guides and then learned the previously used two storage drives automatically seen as Disk ) and DIsk 1 being Sata 3 type drives were seeing all the good stuff end up on those and not the Sata II drive 10 is running on now! I replaced the pair of S3 drives 1tb with a pair of 2tb Sata II drives since.

Note on both desktops one that went from the 10240 right into the 10586 Insider Preview onto the TH2 as well as the main also seeing the upgrade for the two physical 10 upgrade installs all drives were left plugged in! And not one problem to report. With the VMs seeing upgrades as well as things have gone smoothly much more then you would or could expect to have seen with the 10240 upgrade just over one of the TP builds that proceeded it.

Called out yesterday to fix a computer in which Norton AV had been disabled due to the TH2 update having locked half way through.
What didn't help was the mouse pointer was leaping all over the place like a demented dervish dancer.
Clicking on update had no effect so decided to try Recovery which stated impossible during Update.
Going back to Update found that the graph showing half way through was no longer visible so clicked Update and it immediately installed.

I believe clicking on Recovery kick started the faulty Update.

Finally did a Scannow which rectified faults and Norton worked and the mouse behaved like it wasn't on steroids.

Although I never had any problem during the update to TH2 I can certainly sympathise that for novices and those with limited knowledge
the whole exercise could have been a nightmare.

I have posted a few times regarding my work-around to get a set of Fujitsu laptops up to 1511.

I also have dealings with a couple of voluntary organisations, and I asked the computer users how they managed the "big update". They all said that no problems were evident.

I checked what version they were on - all of them on 1024.

One of the laptops is a very new Dell i7, and when I interrogated the Windows Updates module in settings, I saw the dreaded "some updates could not be installed - Retry?" My personal experience says this points to a problem.

So, what I am suggesting is that the whole issue could be much bigger than certainly I had anticipated, but the users are oblivious to what is going on because of the auto-update process.

Well the one Windows Defender update is a hold here! With a av software active it seems the other won't be able to take the latest as usual. So far on both desktops in fact the upgrade saw the 10586 Insider Preview replaced by the upgrade to the TH2 being basically the same thing with a slight difference and neither had anything more then the need to see one or two apps put back on again.

You will note that the av software was active through the entire process and didn't have to be reinstalled all over again as it had previously when going from the 10240 to 10565, 10576 builds. So the freeze ups are mainly previous version to 10 type upgrades where you could expect problems.

sfc /scannow now discovered corrupt files. dism broken with this update i.e. unable to find correct repair source files from microsofts own iso obtained on the mct portal. dism says corrupt system files are repairable. I can see the dism file needed to effect a repair i.e. "install.esd" however "DISM" itself appears broken. Thanks Microsoft, you just had to .... everything up AGAIN.
Yeah, I just tried 1511 as to upgrade and all Hell broke loose on it two days ago. I mean everything on it was messed up, couldn't use my themes because they'll give off a blank screen of whichever color scheme it's in in less then 10 minutes. Whenever I restarted, I get the Black screen until it finally loads. The November Update's still buggy so I forced to return to the previous build which is 10240. So, I'm not sure what to do right now since having issues with the November update.

Which option did you use when going to upgrade over the 10240? With 10 already activated once why even bother with the upgrade? When going for the TH2 upgrades here both physical and VMs upgrades were from the 10586 Insider Preview direct to the 10586 with all going smooth being the same build with a few minor changes on the general release.

With the MC tool or going to the Tech Bench page you can download and save the updated 4 in 1 iso and boot from that live once on flash drive or optical media for a good clean install. I just saw the 10240 combination flash drives changed to the TH2 by deletion of the files while the flash drives remain bootable and simply extracted the iso contents to each drive. Those will now simply be the updated keys until the next build arrives.
