Redmond finally allows activations with Windows 7 keys

Windows 10 Threshold 2 rolled out last week, and in addition to several improvements to apps and the operating system itself, it also brings one of the most awaited features since the debut of Microsofts new OS.

Threshold 2 finally makes it possible to activate a copy of Windows 10 with a Windows 7 or 8.1 key, which makes the upgrade process easier, especially for IT admins that need to perform this process on tens or hundreds of computers.

Previously, in order to fully activate a copy of Windows 10, users of Windows 7 or 8.1 first had to perform a direct upgrade to the new OS, allow it to be validated by Microsoft and only then do a clean install and start from scratch.

How to Fix Windows 10 Threshold 2 Freezing During Install

Windows 10 Threshold 2 (November Update) Installation Problems-windows-10-threshold-2-automatically-reinstalls-all-previously-removed-apps.jpg

Here are some suggestions to address the bug

Windows 10 Threshold 2 was launched last week, but some people are still waiting to get the new version in Windows Update, even if theyre already on RTM.

But a bunch of unlucky Windows 10 users have already received Threshold 2, but it fails to install because of an error that seems to freeze the deployment at different moments during the process.

As we already told you last week, Microsoft recommends users to remove their SD cards from devices that are being upgraded to Windows 10 Threshold 2 because there is a bug that causes the process to get stuck at 44 percent.

But despite this recommendation, it turns out that the issue is still taking place. And whats more, some are seeing it on devices without SD cards.

OK, I'm currently running Windows 10 on my laptop an in trying to do the update either by Windows Update, or through the Media Creation Tool disc (the disc created by MCT), the installation process fails. It doesn't hang or stop, it just simply fails. With the disk I got all the way to the screen where it asks to save files and folders, I click yes... somewhere in there the process failed and I got this message...

Trying it through Windows Update gives this message...

Through the Windows Update the system goes through the motion of downloading and attempting to do the update, after a certain point in the process I get the above message.

This is an i7 machine with a 4gig of memory and a true 256 SSD drive with 60gig of free space on C-drive. And for the record, the laptop came with Windows 8 x64 Pro installed, but I did a clean install when 8.1 was released so the system is not old enough to have compatibility issues... at least hardware wise. At any rate it's currently running Windows 10 without issue, but for some odd reason it won't let me upgrade to TH.

    Suggestions?

You should have some logs in $Windows.~BT\source\panther\ and/or C:\Windows\panther\ called setuperr.log and setupact.log. Look at the error one before the activity...

If nothing found there have a look around these other locations https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927521

If you'd like to upload them check them for personal info first. I can't remember exactly what is in them - probably only your user name and possibly your IP.

This is weird. About half way thru Preparing to install, Windows presented a message that I did not have enough space left on my HDD? Told me to do check disk or delete some programs or connect an external hard drive of at least 10GB. I deleted my Office 365 and it is continuing. This is a 8.1 to 10 upgrade. Will post final results at the end, what ever that might be.

That happened to me and the external disk method didn't work. I deleted some programs like you and it then continued and completed fine once past that screen.
