You don't need an external drive, USB or DVD.

Download the ISO. Double click to mount it. Click on setup.exe.

Ok theory about 31 days delay as new PC blown out window. Update offered this morning in London, downloaded , it's now at black screen 'updating Windows' after a couple restarts now 44%. Beads of sweat on my brow - I hope it's a good sign it's made it this far!!!

The MC tool will burn the iso to disk as I have four of them originally burned until now verifying the need now to wait until next summer for Threshold 3 or 4 if any to burn the future updated builds to come?! There however if you are able to boot live and have a 4gb or larger flash drive you would simply save the iso to a folder on C outside of the user folders as mentioned earlier.

The better move if you don't have too much on is simply seeing a full clean install take place and still leave other folders outside of the users directory intact when not planning to reformat. Creating a new Temp folder to hang onto things in a variety of sub folders can sit there untouched when going through several upgrade installs seen lately on VMs. And you still see the Windows.old created anyways.

Watch out for the 44% problem if you have a SD card put in Windows 10 Threshold 2 (November Update) Installation Problems - Windows 10 Forums
“If your install is freezing at 44%, check if you have an SD card inserted and remove it, and the update should be able to progress beyond this spot..”

I had a second SSD and did a clean install of 10586 and then did a direct transfer of 240 by taking ownership.

My first impressions for the last couple of days are that I have no idea how Microsoft gets away with releasing an operating system with this many bugs.

I mean bugs that literally define an operating system and it's functions.
Just the mere fact of booting up and have all my icons shift to the left side of the screen is bad enough but to have the BSD just by watching a video and editing another at the same time.

Connecting with my android through bluetooth and another BSD when I press play on my android phone to play music on the PC side something I did since Windows 7.

Exactly where is Microsofts mind right now when they first push Windows 10 under the radar, some say illegally, onto working computers when their FLAGSHIP operating system not only looks like blinding crap but fails just as much.

I am not some poor schmuck that doesn't know an operating system.
I worked on old TI mainframes where you had to transfer sealed platers and they looked like big washing machines.

I am also NOT anti Microsoft. I am however po'ed that this garbage has been pushed onto the consumer when the damn thing barely works.

I would go as far to say that 10240 was a far more stable version than 10586 and I'm going back to 8.1 or 7 this weekend and veg out on Fallout 4.

Call me when 10 is actually ready for release to the public. Until then I'll use an older OS and block the unwanted updates.

Can't agree that troubles with Android is "defining" for an OS. I had troubles with them with last 3 phones and all the way from W7.
As far as I'm concerned, 10586 is as ready for mainstream as any other Windows if not more. I have more devices working under W10 than ever was possible without going to extent of modifying drivers like I had to do for W7 for instance. I have a bunch of devices I connect to that can be considered very strange for home use and some really obsolete.
BTW. why did you do that thing with taking ownership of 10240 and doing transfers (of what) ? Might have something to do with your problems.
About icon alignment, did you turn of Auto arrange and turn on Align to grid ? That exists since W95 !
