    Thank you for your response.

To clarify, I have been running Windows 10 Pro since August and have successfully received numerous UPDATES.

Today, I received notification of the first UPGRADE to the August issuance of Windows 10.

Upgrading the Lenovo, I received the failed message for the UPGRADE.

I thought the Media Creation tool was specific to only upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, 8, etc.

Since I already have Windows 10 installed and running, I only want the UPGRADE to the new higher level of OS.

This is why I question whether to use the Media Creation Tool.
MCT works fine upgrading Windows 10 10240 to 10586.3 I did it yesterday so did a lot of other folks here.

I am looking for clarity - as my PC is new. Is it possible the reason I am not being offered the update is because 31 days have not elapsed since the builder activated/installed Windows 10 pro (even though this was a first time clean install - Windows 7,8 etc have never been anywhere near the machine). Could another factor be that up until 3 days ago I had 'defer' updates ticked. I stupidly did this because the whole insider ring business confused the hell out of me and I did not want early builds/beta versions going anywhere near the machine , so perhaps the 31 day timer started then and I may not see the update offered til mid December? If that is the case am more than happy to wait it out. The kinks in the update delivery and failed installs may be ironed by then. But I am just keen to know, MS had been very unclear about all of this

    cheers,
    wayne
Yes, because Microsoft wants to give everyone that 30 day to revert to the previous OS except in your case, you don't have one but maybe they forgot all about the clean installers and basically only check for days since installation.

I did a in place upgrade with the ISO from the MCT on my desktop and laptop and everything went Ok. I did a clean install on my wife's laptop today and so far no problems.

[/COLOR]Craig, you either download an ISO or the Media Creation Tool.

The Media Creation Tool has all the files you need to either upgrade/update or clean install Windows 10. It's downloaded to your computer and then installed to your flash drive. Just plug in your flash drive, double click on the tool and follow the yellow brick road.

The ISO also has all the files you need, but you will need Rufus or another similar app in order to make the flash drive bootable.

ISO From ( within Windows ,> rt click ISO image > mount the ISO <open same > and run the install /set up exe all from within Windows that way OR you can burn an ISO directly to a DVD and and boot from that OR just download the ISO image or USB flash drive installer from the MCT link. here.

You can clean install or in place update install from any of these options including the MCT or download USB or ISO media from the MCT also .

This is from within the MCT set up exe :

But, only those running Win 10 Pro can do that. Bummer! I have Window 10 Home.
Thanks for the clarification on that. I shall edit my post to reflect that. I guess the author should've noted that, eh?.

You did nothing wrong! If I had Pro version I wouldn't have noticed the difference. Wonder why MS doesn't include that on all versions?

Thanks there, GARoss. Yes, I know. I'm glad you caught that. I've always ran Pro, so I wouldn't have known. Just needed to clarify that in my post linking the article.
