Now to the Desktop!! It has Win 10 Pro, 10240build. I did the 'check for updates' and the following happened - downloaded the upgrade 100%, then the getting ready for install right to 100% then instead of saying restart (so that it could install) the screen reverted to 'check for updates'. Ever since no upgrade shows up.
The folder $WINDOWS.~BT is on the computer. $Windows.~WS is not on the computer. Install.esd is in 'sources'.

I restarted/rebooted the computer several times and am still 10240. I know about MCT but was wondering if I can install from the files in the BT folder?

Thanks Wynona...your comments definitely cleared that up for me...i just downloaded it using the tool and made a dvd iso to keep as a "backup"....:)

@Almighty1: You were quite correct in your comments...the key isn't put into your bios (although from what i hear, windows 8 machines do have the key imbedded in the bios) but rather, your hardware is registered with the MS servers if you originally did the upgrade from 7 or 8 to Windows 10 and in that way, any future clean installs it knows your are legit)

Glad I'm correct about that one since I remember ever since Windows started requiring keys which was probably 13+ years ago when XP first came out, it always had some sort of fingerprint registered in Microsoft's Authentication servers for activation so when you change a certain amount of hardware, it will require activation again. Looks like for those with UEFI bioses, it is in the BIOS...

Wow, its been busy around here. I've been sifting through the posts & I'm confused. I'm running Windows 10 Home 64-bit & I have checked Windows Update several times & it says I'm up to date. Are MS servers too busy or do I just need to download the Media Creation Tool for TH2 & do an update?

I think you can try it. There's a tutorial for catching the install.esd file by Kari on YouTube:

Watch it; it might give you the information you need to proceed.

I'd download the MCT; in fact, I did. :) I clean installed on my desktop because it very much needed it, although I wasn't having problems.

This may help some of you that are wondering why you're not getting the upgrade via WU: http://news.softpedia.com/news/how-t...e-496116.shtml

    Edit:

Someone pointed out that this refers to Pro edition and not the Home edition.

I'd prefer to do an update. So, you're running Win 10 Insider Preview TH2 version 1511 build 10586 now? I'm on Win 10 Home 64-bit. Is this update for my system or just Insiders?

I am looking for clarity - as my PC is new. Is it possible the reason I am not being offered the update is because 31 days have not elapsed since the builder activated/installed Windows 10 pro (even though this was a first time clean install - Windows 7,8 etc have never been anywhere near the machine). Could another factor be that up until 3 days ago I had 'defer' updates ticked. I stupidly did this because the whole insider ring business confused the hell out of me and I did not want early builds/beta versions going anywhere near the machine , so perhaps the 31 day timer started then and I may not see the update offered til mid December? If that is the case am more than happy to wait it out. The kinks in the update delivery and failed installs may be ironed by then. But I am just keen to know, MS had been very unclear about all of this

    cheers,
    wayne

But, only those running Win 10 Pro can do that. Bummer! I have Window 10 Home.
