Windows 10: First Major Update for Windows 10 Available

  1.    13 Nov 2015 #621

If i download the iso using the media creation tool, would i be getting the updated iso that lets one put in their windows 7 or 8 product keys to do a clean install and no longer asks for the key if you had originally done an upgrade and your hardware is now registered on the MS servers?

Also, if i use it in the future to make a clean install, will it bring in whatever the latest updated version of windows 10 is? (or would it need to update to it) thanks!

I am asking these questions because i was thinking about using it to do force the upgrade to th2 but i also wanted to have an iso back up on hand for any possible future use (such as doing a clean install if needed)...

My experience was even better than expected. Doing a clean install with the new iso on my desktop pc that had previously been upgraded to Windows 10, it not only installed flawlessly, but did not prompt for a product key at any time during or after the install. Upon verification of the status it showed as activated. So no more clicking "skip" during the installation.

the idea is you do an upgrade will not ask for product keys, clean install will be asking for keys.

Clean install over previously installed win10 did not ask for key here. The key must also be in the bios imo. Go figure.

Craig, you either download an ISO or the Media Creation Tool.

The Media Creation Tool has all the files you need to either upgrade/update or clean install Windows 10. It's downloaded to your computer and then installed to your flash drive. Just plug in your flash drive, double click on the tool and follow the yellow brick road.

The ISO also has all the files you need, but you will need Rufus or another similar app in order to make the flash drive bootable.

Most likely the Media Creation Tool will only create Version 1511 (Build 10586.3) and will not update.

Having the current MCT is a very good idea; I have mine. You can use it for updating any other computers you have. And, as you say, if you need to do a clean install, you have it handy. I think you can probably use it to reset or repair an installation too.

A clean install doesn't ask for a product key if you've already updated to Windows 10. I wasn't asked for one at all.

After reading this below with many thanks to @ClusterHead, now I know why I'm not seeing it on Windows Update and won't until another 13 days later as I just did a in-place upgrade install on October 26, 2015 which is always needed a few days before 30 days are up due to the Start menu failing. I guess I'll just sit tight and read the forums here and see what new problems there are. With my track record since August 11, 2015 - my Start Menu should fail before then and I'll just use the Tech Bench ISO downloaded yesterday and do a in-place upgrade. LOL.

Besides that, this forum seems to not be sending all email notifications for this thread as there are a lot missing while it's working fine for other threads.

Doubt it's in the bios but rather it could be a fingerprint of your hardware on Microsoft's authentication servers. or it's tied to your Microsoft account.

You can sit tight or download the Media Creation Tool and use that to update.

I already downloaded the Tech Bench ISO yesterday. I want to do the WU route for a reason as I know how the installer works after doing all the 2-3 in-place upgrades since August 11, 2015. I just want to experience the WU route if I even get that far as my Start Menu usually will fail a few days before 30 days anyways after I reboot for something while the system is up 24x7. I uninstalled and reinstalled dropbox yesterday and see if the Start Menu will fail again. If it does, I'll just use the ISO and do the in-place upgrade.
