    Thank you for your response.

To clarify, I have been running Windows 10 Pro since August and have successfully received numerous UPDATES.

Today, I received notification of the first UPGRADE to the August issuance of Windows 10.

Upgrading the Lenovo, I received the failed message for the UPGRADE.

I thought the Media Creation tool was specific to only upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7, 8, etc.

Since I already have Windows 10 installed and running, I only want the UPGRADE to the new higher level of OS.

This is why I question whether to use the Media Creation Tool.

It is now three hours from when I posted the above.

Thanks to the procedure given to me in this thread, I downloaded the MCT and installed the upgrade successfully. The laptop is now running properly.

    Thanks for your help!

The recovery 8GB partion contains the factory recovery image...

I would copy the contains of that partition to a USB and then recover the 8GB of space into C:

Well, I know I mentioned earlier in this thread that it's likely to be our impatience that's the cause of many of us having these installation problems, but alas, I gave in and used the 'MediaCreationTool.exe' method! (My excuse is that I am bored and currently housebound by 'Storm Abigail' here in UK but at least I still have the electricity and internet switched on.)

The installation went well on my 64-bit W10 Home laptop and to my great relief all my installed programs remained in place. I just had to adjust a few things like Icon/text sizes etc and some other small tweaks. Currently in the middle of updating another 32-bit W10 Pro machine via MCT and all going well so far. Happy days!

    LOL!

    @carbuff
It's ok to use the MCT on machines on which you already got W10, it works just fine. :)

Media Creation Tool (which has also been updated) also works for upgrading Windows 10 build 10240 to build 10586.

The windows 10 e mail client UI app linked to my ISP web mail works fine in my windows 10 10586.3 licencenced NTFS partition but on Insider 10586.3 volume . Images wont show in open mail in the e mail client app . It was that way before the last update from 10586 to 10586.3 on the Insider build.
I'll wait and see what the next complete new Insider build brings .

FWIW I've removed and re installed the offending e mail client app and no change .

    Sent from Windows Insider 10586.3
I thought I'd use that until I got able to install Office 365 2016 again, but it was a total mess! So was Outlook.com, which is the reason I reinstalled Office 2013. Sometimes "native" programs are not the best at all.

    Good for you, Debbie!

I did a clean install on my desktop with the MCT, but I decided to see if Lappy 17 would update correctly, since I don't have much of anything on her yet. So far, so good; downloading updates is at 50%. If things go wrong, I'll just use the MCT and get her back on track. :)

    RANT:
HEY Microsoft, if you're listening....I only had 1 out of 4 PCs that were able to update to the latest version (10586) through the Windows Update process; all others had to be done with the MCT. If you were a professional baseball player you probably would be released from the team for such a low batting average.

I don't get it, how can there be so many problems updating to a higher version. It's like they took and modified the process after they gave it to the Windows Insiders. 3 of the 4 machines are less than a year old so there is no saying that I had outdated components. The last PC is 2 1/2 to 3 years old.

The Media Creation Tool is for whatever you need to do, Carbuff. Since you already have Windows 10 up and running, you can use the MCT to upgrade or do a clean install, whichever you choose.
