    Windows 1.00 to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Build 14971.1000

I clean installed 10586. I notice that the PC rebooted after the "skip a pin" step. Also update took a long time to connect. I'm now on 10586.11

On a clean install you'll get an option to only save files locally on this PC. Might not be the exact wording but its there. Click that and nothing get s saved to Onedrive unless you want it too. I haven't done an upgrade to see if it's there too.

Yep, Alpha, I saw that too. It still gives a choice of where to save, including OneDrive.

Used Windows 7 Key to activate Windows 10 - 10586.

My wife has a Dell Inspiron 1545 notebook computer that had Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded it to Windows 10 - 10240 in July 2015 and it activated right away. I just got a good deal on a 120GB SSD drive and installed that in the old notebook, replacing the old spinning hard drive. Tried to do a clean install, skipping entering the key, and when Windows 10 - 10586 booted up it said it was not activated and wouldn't activate automatically.

So, I tried the new option of entering the Windows 7 Home Premium key that came with the notebook computer. In this case the Windows 7 key was printed on a label that is under the removable battery. It worked entering the Windows 7 Home Premium key and Windows 10 - 10586 activated instantly. I used the Settings, Activation, Change Product Key option to enter the Windows 7 Home Premium key.

So if a clean install of Windows 10 - 10586 doesn't activate automatically, try entering your old product key from Windows 7.

Windows 7 PC's don't store the key in the BIOS. If no OS is installed, there is no way to auto detect the Windows 7 key. It's only ever stored in the Windows registry. There is an OEM marker in the BIOS SLIC table but no actual product code. Still, if this PC was already upgraded and activated, it should have had a digital entitlement and activated anyway? Weird that it didn't? It will defiantly have one now though. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. For Product key it should say this device is activated with a digital entitlement. Next clean install there should be no need to enter any key at all.

I have exactly the same notebook, another Dell Inspiron 1545. I upgraded it in July 2015 to 10248. Then a couple of weeks later I did a clean install of 10240 and it activated right away. Haven't tried a clean install of 10586 on this unit yet.

This was my first attempt at doing a clean install using 10586. Glad it has the option of entering the old Windows 7 key.

Everyone has a digital camera now. Take a picture of your Windows Product Key labels just in case they get damaged. It's easy for the product key to be scraped or rubbed off the label. It's good to have a backup.

I've done a couple of clean installs of 10586. They all activated with a 10 Pro Digital Entitlement that I got when I upgraded them from 8.1 Pro to 10240 10 Pro. I use a PID.txt file to enter the Pro generic key. It installs Pro by default with no prompt for a key. Just saves me time. It will only work if the PC already had a digital entitlement. If it doesn't it won't activate.

    - those setting were showing..
    - some major glitch occurred when I attempted to literally move the Documents folder to the PC

    - ended up having to do a clean install of an early build (no ISO yet for current insider build)

    - spooky the PC went haywire like that..
    - rebuilding (yet again!!)
