    Hi,

That brings me to my all time wish and may I say great idea. A Windows without any "fat", Just a bare bone OS without any Apps, small programs like Notepad, Wordpad, Media player, Calc..... Nothing, not even a browser . I routinely replace them with much better aftermarket stuff anyway and most of it is freeware. Windows could be cheaper without all those things that are not all made in-house but MS have to pay for their inclusion.
As they are, Windows is not just OS but whole system that is not needed by everybody.
    Hear, hear. !!

It's not as if that it doesn't exist though. It's just a pity it is not available for purchase by the public at large.
That said, I'm far too ignorant to produce a tutorial on how to turn say Win 10 Pro into a stripped down version a la Win 7 Ultimate or such.
I'm sure it can be done though.

    Cheers,

I don't have any issue with interface or "in your face" looks, it's relatively easy to fix those things but as it's changeable anyway why not drop it and let everybody decide for themselves what to use. Brand name computer manufacturers, specially laptops, fill it up with even more useless crap and in some cases up to usability border.
So give me a sub 50 bucks windows and let me go nuts with it. As it is, I guess I use 30% or less of what's in there. I have a nice collection of freeware, simple programs that do only one or two things at a time and it's quite enough. Those programs that do everything but cook, babysit or wash windows and include everything but kitchen sink, cost arm and a leg, I have little use for.
The "In You Face" part was just how the majority saw 8 when that arrived in CP form! It got the "Mobile OS" tag on the spot and did poorly on the market due to MS went about trying to bring in the dual platform OS without first thinking things through! Basically a good deal of what was familiar had been and still is somewhat stripped out while 10 being the new kid on the block is simply bringing it's own new features.

That's how software companies make their profits by selling more then you need! And as for customizations you don't really hear that too much as you did in the past with Vista and 7 customizations and Window Blinds while Stardock had a role of the additional CircleDock and RocketDock addon toolbars with the auto hide feature seen with the Rocket Dock form of Taskbar. 8 Saw the Classic Shell compete with the Start menu 7 item followed by the now seen Start 10 in use here by the way for the main build's 10 install without the tile but not the 7 stype menu choosen either. Try the Modern look!

Re Ccleaner: I wonder if the times it gets uninstalled, if it does have to do with the Monitoring being turned on. I keep it off, as I don't need that background nonsense.
Typically as with any upgrade over an existing Windows installation regardless of version you will tend to see a few apps take a walk on you. Whenever planning any OS change you actually should be planning on it happening since most will simply prefer replacing or possibly avoiding an upgrade with a full clean install being the preferred route!

Not everyone will want an OS stripped down to the bones! There's a good number that will expect to be seeing the usual packages plus their own treats tossed into the mix afterwards.. Here besides some of the more important newer features seen since 7 days I should say still in there such as Virtual Desktop and Hyper-V options with the Start menu being replaced anyways the pre-bloat which included Edge for the time being as well could be done without since I tend to load things up rather quickly while trying other 3rd gears out.

Lately try finding a full screen recording program that won't leave the full screen app you are trying to record minimized to the taskbar has been a task of it's own! I still tend to keep folders full of other small utility apps and system tools found to work on 10 I collected over the years so who needs the factory bloat???

Most people wouldn't know where to start with such an OS!

How do you get hold of the aftermarket stuff without a browser to search, find and download it in the first place?

There aren't any PC hobbyist magazines with cover disks packed with freeware utilities, and the latest version of Netscape and AOL any more - those days are gone!

Remember MSDOS before Plug'N'Play? Having to load your drivers for your devices in Config.sys to get them working for video, audio, network, comms, etc., - having to get the Computer Guy in to sort your autoexec.bat out?

I do - 'cos I was one of those computer guys - systems engineer by day, support guy in the evenings and Clipper programmer by night, fuelled by coffee and biscuits!

And I wouldn't want to go back to that limited, exhausting, frustrating world.

Be thankful that you now have an almost infinite range of choices, just within your OS, to do what you want and need to, and you don't have to remember how to use Edlin and all those DOS command switches, just to get a stable display on your monitor.

@CountMike is a GNU/Linux user too, if he wants "Bare Bones" he can use Arch, and then CLI his way into bare "bones bliss"

    Sure.
OTOH who wants a hybrid desktop if they have no use for it?
Metro apps you just can't uninstall in the usual way, etc., etc.
    MS never learns, does it?

The bare bones market is how big? Oh, yes, that market will keep MS going.

The vast majority of windows users don't know which way is up with their computer so I am firmly with Fafhrd.

The idea of a stripped down OS for the vast majority is just stupid. I certainly don't want to be supporting people with that OS.

Agree ....if U want a stripped down OS then Linux Ubuntu or one of the others is your ticket and you can customise it and skin it as you will and compile your own HDWE drivers for it sometimes because you can't find any !

I remember DOS and 3.1 before plug and play and loading drivers and patches to play a game I don't miss all that at all or dip switches and jumpers ,IRQ conflicts, modem strings ,or the (free) CD's with freeware and crapware on them !

Anyways, you have the barebones OS (2 versions actually) each time you download Windows (although you have no license to use it as an OS), in the form of Win PE and Win RE.

To see what can be done with it follow Kyhi's excellent thread here:

    Windows 10 without Metro?

Maybe uninstall the apps you can ,empty the start menu program folder, put a control panel shortcut in your start menu and task bar ( god mode too !) turn Cortana [off] and get start 8 or start 10 and call it a day ☻☻
