Win10586 installed like a breeze, no problem what so ever. Like the previous builds it uninstalled "8Gadgetspack" which regenerated automatically. It also uninstalled "Speccy" which required new installation. No watermark on the screen this time. This Build is identified in System as Windows 10 Pro Version 1511, Build 10586 with the activation number.

FYI in 10586 typing " winver " into task bar search brought up this :

Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10586 for PC-winver-2.0.png

This must be Threshold AKA the fall update to RTM ofc the question remains are our insider versions tattooed to expire at some point although "slmgr /xpr" in a Command Prompt does not report any expiration date and there is no watermark.

I'm still thinking our 10586 versions have some sort of expiration though maybe this will hit the street ( RTM ) in a week or two

There is none for the obvious reason that it is the Fall Update and not a preview build. It is the build that will be released to the general public on the 15th (if Microsoft is serious about the name, "Windows 10 1511"). To release a download link would lead to a stampede of non-insiders to get the official build ahead of the release. I'm sure Microsoft has events planned around the rollout and doesn't want the impact of the public announcement blunted by everybody and his brother already running it.

Reading your post I'm assuming 1511 is obviously for 15 Nov now . .

Typed in winver in the other NTFS volume ( RTM ) on this dual booter and obviously 10240 came up .

For finding out just which version you have that's rather a fast simple trip into the Start>Settings>System and scroll down to the About option where you will see the "OS Build" number displayed right under the version number along with some basic system information like how much you have. Here 4gb was provided to the VM the 10586 upgraded the 10576 build on.

The main purpose for continuing to see newer builds is obvious! First you have MS's own program developers going over things finding bugs to fix as well as 3rd party software developers looking at why things won't work on the 10240 that get fixed in the later builds. Like previous versions say 7 media that included SP1 while the launch media was without the subsequent 10 media to be seen in 2016 will be improved over what is being sold presently as 10 progresses along.

I think you will find some newer then launch 8 builds if you have an MS subscription for TechNet or MSDN. The Insider program is there to collect feedback as well as seeing the fixes as well as newer features to come getting prepped.

    1511 is surely 2015/11

Just like the Ubuntu latest release is 15.10 for October 2015.

10240 was a bit special being the first General Availability version of Windows 10, so it was called Microsoft Windows version 10.0 (Build 10240) in the Winver dialog.

With a rolling update for Windows 10, unless Microsoft chooses a naming convention for new General Availability releases, it's likely to continue using year and month as version numbers. It would be confusing to use month and date year on year, wouldn't it?

What I find amusing is the predating of the copyright notice to (c) 2016 Microsoft Corporation

10565, 10576, 10586 suggests Windows 10-565, 576, 586 without the date. The Build number however does suggest 1015, 1115 or as seen with the latest Ubuntu release 15:10 for the other OS there. when that came out in October 2015. Dating builds is essentially common practice in order to have be able to track which particular build is being worked with especially when used for testing purposes while no one at the retail consumer end ever pays much attention as far as the general public is concerned.

Originally never having beta tested anything OS while looking beta programs I signed up for the 7 beta and the MS program back in 2012 for a look at 8 bypassing 8.1 until going in on the Insider Preview program back in January. As a rule you never any direct download links except for the Enterprise developer build while when going to see the 10240 VM upgraded to the next available IP I not only saw the 10565 available but had also ran into a download page along with the update where I then simply saved the download on the VM itself and tranferred to the host for a mounted iso upgrade on a second VM.

For the 10576 and now the 10586 builds no such download page came up. I had to assume that was a fluke of some type since I haven't been able to get back to the same Insider page but would likely still see the 10565. Being signed at TechNet as well as MS Connect I would say a fluke for sure. I'm mentioning that here for anyone looking for download links not to expect any since the general method is by way of the Windows updates option there for getting them. An MS account is also a requirement as well.

    Error Code 0x80072EF1

After a clean install of 10586, when I try to set for Insider Builds I get Error Code 0x80072EF1.

    Any ideas?

    EDIT: TechNet gives 0x80072EF1 -2147012879 ERROR_INTERNET_OPERATION_CANCELLED

If you don't sign up for the Insider program you will immediately run into probllems! I put that to the test last night in fact while setting up another 10 VM and not signing into the usual account. The option was disabled!

Once a new account was created I waited for a bit and then went back into the Advanced options and immediately was able to initialize the Get Windows insider builds option Get started button.. That also requires a restart and later check to see if the Slow-Fast slider bar is present underneath the Stop insider builds button which that becomes. You may run into the Fix me option on the same button first before seeing it change to the Stop. Insider Builds - Start or Stop Receiving in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
