    Me too!
But one could use PowerShell and OneGet.
I do the same thing. On a separate partition I have a folder with all of the things I install. Makes life easy.

    Powershell not included:

just a bare bone OS without any Apps, small programs like Notepad, Wordpad, Media player, Calc..... Nothing, not even a browser

I have at least 1 TB of all kinds of programs and addons stashed away, no winter there.

Well, that's one thing we old codgers can agree on - reminiscences, - as well as a growing resentment of changes, a rosy-coloured retrospectoscope, and that Linux isn't anywhere near perfect yet!
Well once again that will depend mainly on what is being changed. One thing MS did right with Vista was leave the option in for the Classic Windows theme when first introducing the Aero. With bringing in a dual platform OS with 8 however they messed up big time! Yet at the same time something that might be taken for granted would be Hyper-V coming in as well rather then the need for any 3rd program to a VM.

You hope for the best but often end up looking at something else instead. When 7 came out it first looked as if MS was finally on the right track finally deciding to put some real effort into making the OS work out. And then came the dreaded "8" factor no one wanted! Yet people often don't realize what goes on under the hood as far as progress at times due to being presented with a GUI dressing that goes over like a lead balloon!

One fast solution if you don't like looking at tiles? Go for Start menu 10 where you can have the 7 look back, a Modern updated look of the old style Start menu, or opt for a less bloat filled Start with tiles area not quite the bloat. $4.99 tag for that one.

Yet it seems that interface carries all the weight, damn the kernel, APIs and IOs, ugly icons = OS trash !!

Don't you keep a library of downloaded installers?

I have my program and driver installers backed up on an internal partition and on an external HDD.

It was a reasonable idea. :)
I keep installers I might want for the OS that I'm using and keep them current when I update the installer after I find out the new one works and I keep known working drivers in folders on each PC .

Ubuntu being one of the most popular live distros still lacks a bit with this new change however. It is actually now a bit more awkward to navigate then your older 12:04 LTS release which I gave a look at a few years ago. That particular distro seems to be taking a nose dive with this latest 15:10 seen presently.
I might have to try one of the newer for an occasional diversion when I get done tinkering with Windows 10 .

And besides any old museum piece like the DEC VT278H Lead boat achor heavy monitor and the IBM 386 flat top back in '82 I was looking at the 2" lcd screen on the first notebook put on the market being the Epson HX-20!
I remember when a Friend was working for Osborne and he had one of those Osbourne Ones at home we used to play presumably CP/M 2.2 text games on the little monochrome screen on that huge box !
