I have been already playing with the idea I don't actually need Office other than the Online version without subscription. Now I am decided and will keep the 5 GB OneDrive for documents and find myself another cloud for photo backups...maybe. maybe external HDD backup will be enough. And leaving OneNote for Evernote too...

How are you not paying 50% more ?

    For 50GB on OneDrive it's $1.99 X 12 (months) = $23.88

    For 50GB on Icloud it's $0.99 X 12 (months) = $11.88

    So $23.88 x .5 ( .5 = 50%) = $11.94 ( which is more than 50% )

Currently OneDrive is $1.99 for 100GB ( 100x.50 = 50 F.Y.I )! So essentially they're taking 50% of your storage away and charging the same price that Google will be (when they go through with it) which is $1.99(not including the 15gb they haven't gotten rid of, or the unlimited HQ photos upload). So why would I pay Microsoft an extra dollar a month just because they me want to(when there is cheaper after their tier change)? If I switch to Icloud over five years I save $59.70 for the same amount of space! If I switch to Google Drive I get 50 GB more a month for the same price as OneDrive! I don't wanna pay another $12 a year, when I can spend 20 seconds and migrate to another service with MultCloud (which will either give me more space or save me money)!

Lol, are you using Microsoft math here dude? That's not 50% more, that's 100% more...

I guess people who want "Free" space need to start using Bing(if they're not already) and turn in those rewards!

What happens if I have extra storage from a promotion or some other offer?
The storage you have as part of other promotions is not affected by this change.

Well, this is pretty bad news. I was using my free OneDrive for system backups, but a paltry 5GB will be useless for that. Yet another MS service I lose or am forced to drop, it seems. Their justification is clearly a load of BS too, if people uploading massive amounts of data was really the problem they'd surely just discontinue the unlimited plans, not also drop the regular free plans down to this level.

Just penny pinching, or does MS have serious concerns about it's long-term viability maybe?

Here you all go: Give us back our storage – Feature Suggestions for Microsoft OneDrive

    I suggest you ...

    ← OneDrive
    Give us back our storage

Recently, a blog post was announced detailing that you would be reducing our free and paid storage. Only 1TB for Office 365 customers, and only 5 GB for free customers. I have been a long-time OneDrive fan, but after this upgrade I can no longer recommend it as my promised storage has been taken away. Some of us actually store a normal amount of stuff in OneDrive. Why makes us pay for those who went over the top?

Ultimately, I don't trust any "free" cloud storage solution. It can be taken away at any time, as shown here. An external 1-TB sata drive connected through USB 3.0 is less than $50. That's my backup solution.

HOW can Microsoft start charging people who are over the ridiculously low 5GB limit? Did the company take your bank or credit card information when you started to use One-Sky-Drive, or whatever it's now called? My only experience is with Google Drive.

Edit to ask: How does a few people illegally using 15TB of storage, warrant punishing everyone, by reducing free storage from 15GB down to 5GB? There must be more to this story than what meets the eye.

I'm not happy about this news. I have an 0365 account, so I get the 1tb of storage with the now gone promise of unlimited. The taking back of this benefit is not good, but lowering the free storage to such a low amount is a bad move on MS's part, and I think they may change that again, as they will hear about it.

It's the free 30GB down to 5GB which is a shame
Many people have been using Onedrive to put there music collection on there (linked into Groove), now if they have more than 5GB of music they will have to pay for storage
This is why I never rely on "free" as things can change and now you're stuck with either paying for the service, or having to go through the inconvenience of finding an alternate solution. This why I don't use cloud as my base storage for any large amount of data.

It bodes ill for those who think that there will be free perpetual upgrades for Windows 10 with Redstone and beyond, without tie-ins to paid services such as Office 365.
