    You know what gets me..

Microsoft clearly want Windows 10 on as many devices as possible and are especially keen for people to upgrade.

Why don't they simply make it keyless for anyone who upgrades before the free offer has done, they could still make it activate one that device. And when it's not free I assume you will need a key anyway. In other words simply clean install it on any computer you want and it will activate on that machine, regardless of the O.S. that was on before.

It's more like a free upgrade and not "free" to anyone. That's why a key of sorts is need to activate it from a previous OS.

Oh yes I understand that, but why not simply make it 'free completely' I doubt there is anything to be gained from not doing that.

I don't know why but the upgrade process is set up for 7 and 8 only. No testing has been done for previous OS's. And MS wants to make sure that each user has a valid purchased copy of Windows to get the new OS, 10. Otherwise they could be rewarding pirates and I would hate that.

Upgraded about a week or so ago. No problems at all with activation. Have been wanting to do a clean install but may wait a bit now to take advantage of this.
You won't gain anything by waiting because you have already upgraded. You can clean install now and have exactly the same results.

Please, correct me if I am wrong. You will need to download a new windows 10 install image in November before being able to use your windows 7/8.1 key.

So there I am with my 10 year old machine glorying in a magnificent 1 meg of ram which runs my XP perfectly well. I don't have a care in the world. Microsoft kindly offers me a free upgrade to the answer to all my longings. It's Windows 10 Pro. Yeeha now watch my productivity soar. Oops my wonderful machine crashed. Why did it do that? It never crashed with XP Pro.

Who can I blame? Will Mr. Nadella take my calls, which will be numerous and aggrieved?

Have you asked Microsoft to refund you the purchase price of what they charged you for Windows 10?

That would be my guess -- since MS is updating their ISO files on an ongoing basis.
