As you may already know, not everybody is using a tablet, let alone a Windows tablet which is too pricey. Most Microsoft's customers use a traditional desktop PC. And Windows 10 is a desktop OS, so it should give priority to desktop computers, not tablets! Nobody said to remove the Settings app. Let it there for tablet mode or anyone wanting to use it. But also let the old Control Panel for everyone else! Even if the Settings app adopts all the controls and renders Control Panel obsolete, why remove it? Let it the for compatibility sake! Nobody forces others to use the Control Panel, they are free to use the Settings app if they want. But please don't force us use the Settings app! At least not until all controls have migrated to the Settings app. For the time being there are several controls not yet available. Make them available first, and then we'll reconsider.

I may sound like 100-year-old now, but I like change when it is for the better. If not, I would rather stay with the old ways. Settings right now is lacking a lot of advanced features only accessible by the classic Control Panel. This is not my idea of "better", so I was surprised to learn they are going to remove the classic Control Panel. Yes, go ahead and remove it, but please first migrate all these controls to the Settings app! And what about third-party applets? These won't work if they remove the classic control panel!

I have been staying out of this because I can understand both sides of this debate, but....
What in the heck do you mean here? Please explain. At first I though you meant the MMC snap-ins, but they're not 3rd party, and can be accessed in the start menu.

Third-party control applets, like that of Adobe Flash, Java, Antivirus and whatever non-Microsoft. Anyone using these will not be able to do so anymore if the classic Control Panel is removed. Yeah, I know, I should move to a new version of the program. If this new version implies I have to buy a new version, no thanks! I rather keep the old version.

You're not losing the CP for some time and when you do you're just going to have to adjust to the settings. It's time to get over this and move on.. IMO

Correct out with the old in with the new, otherwise some of us would still be using windows 98 or XP.
I use Settings now have not been in control panel for ages, and I am a senior user but not a stick in the mud

I still contend and will continue to contend that logic dictates that the functions of the Control Panel will have to be moved to the settings menu before the control panel is removed. No one on this forum has any knowledge of how it will be done, what functionality it will have or how it will look. But, it is going to be done whether we like it or not. Because we have no idea of the looks or functionality of the end result, we have nothing to complain about, other than I don't want anything to change. The only logical thing for all of us to do is just wait and see what they do with it. In actuality, we have no choice but to do just that. Complaining about something that does not exist and something none of us have any idea of how it will function is not even reasonable. Once we see it, we all may have a whole lot to complain about. But, until that time comes, we have to just wait and see. Offer recommendations/suggestions/complaints to Microsoft if you want to. But, there is no one who can do anything about any of that here. We cannot really like or dislike it; we've never seen it.

Microsoft going to kill the Control Panel

I just read this and I hope they don't but it would suck if they do and from what I read it look like they'll . I guess the next thing would be someone to invent a script program to bring it back

    Code:

I’ve noticed you keep hammering away at presenting your apprehension of MS removing the CP. Let’s look at this logically as essembe stresses, shall we?

Not much in your profile as to know how old you are, but you seem to be very knowledgeable with Windows systems. Nor would we know how long you’ve been using Windows, but it seems like quite some time. Personally, I’ve been using Windows since W95. That was actually short-lived for me, then a year after moved onto W98, then onto 98SE, then Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and now 10. With each new edition we saw new features added and UI changes, especially with the introduction of Windows NT beginning with workstations and server editions, then with Windows 2000 of which I skipped. We saw the CP/God mode grow to a fairly large size all along also, including 3rd party applets as you stated. Through the years MS with Windows was so successful as to gain 90% of the PC market mostly due to Enterprise/Business adoption which promoted home use. Most businesses and people simply use Windows.

During the era with the development of Vista they noticed the beginning of a great surge in demand for mobile devices and the start of a flattening market of tower PCs. As time went on demand for more mobile kept escalading, whereas tower PCs and conventional laptops started to decline even more. So basically when developing 7 they introduced touch and snapping to attempt to run on mobile devices as well. It was a huge success on tower PCs and laptops, but it didn’t fair too well on mobile devices. iThings and Android made great leaps in that market. So, what’s a mother to do? Adapt to the current market trends, of course. Either adapt to the change or loose the race. What asset does MS have over the others to accomplish this? Well, Windows of course. A new Windows with the introduction and development of WinRT application architecture so to run across any device as we saw in 8/8.1. The only one out of the big 3 that is accomplishing this.

So far as 3rd party applets in the CP. Who’s to say they can’t get ported over to the Settings app? In fact, they might have to be ported over unless a Modern Store app suffices. e.g. I see a lot of printer OEMs releasing their own apps as seen below. I had one for my old Lexmark printer in 8.1 and have a new Canon printer with the Store app for 8.1 and 10, which is the same app and being familiar. These are just as good if not better than the old Win32 applets. If any company wants to compete, then they’ll have to keep up and release a Store app. Why? Because more people use Windows. All these apps are free, BTW. If Oracle with Java, Adobe with Flash, or any Antivirus wants to compete, then they’ll have to jump on the band wagon. I see Adobe is with their Store Reader app of which I installed. Also, just as a sideline, I see Adobe thinks people are using mobile devices as seen in their pic here: eSign service, e-signatures online, formerly EchoSign Adobe Acrobat DC

In closing; The porting over to the WinRT program architecture is a huge undertaking and will take time. No overnight matter. With each release the Store apps get better with more functionality. Same with the Settings app.
