IDK - I think once you've installed, it's gone. I haven't been able to find it after upgrades - I always copy it when "preparing to install" begins.
I just found mine, Simrick, right where we've been telling him it is. And this is an upgrade/update. I'm not fast enough to grab it thru the "preparing to install" bit.

    I found this :
The tutorial apparently still has some old information, I will fix it. In earlier builds the ESD file could be found in C:\RecoveryImage folder. This folder does not exist anymore in post RTM builds, and the ESD file should be found in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT folder but this is not always the case(¹), the ESD file is sometimes no longer present after the upgrade. You need to grab it when the download is done but before the upgrade process starts and copy to another location.

Watch the video in this post to see how to get the ESD file before the upgrade process itself starts.

(¹) Some users will have it, some not, I have found no logics in this. I've lost it on every machine after the upgrade.

I ( think ) I just found mine or an earlier one in the C drive directory tree recovery image folder but it's for an earlier test build 10061 I'm on 10547 here are the file notes below what did I find here ?

FWIW IIRC that may have been my last clean install of a test build from an ISO although I had earlier test builds prior to that train wreck ☻.

Upgrade will not replace the on-disk recovery image if this file is present. Do not delete or modify this file.

I haven't had an ESD file remain on my computer since an April upgrade - that was the last one, and it's still there. Nothing since then has been left on my computer - they have all disappeared once I upgraded. I've grabbed every one of them using Kari's tutorial.

Thanks ... OK cool ! That explains why my C: Recovery > C:\$WINDOWS.~BT folder still present in 10547 only has an earlier test build no. 10061 dated April 2015 in there .

Can the contents of the old recovery folder be deleted safely or no? I'm assuming yes if windows allows it ?

So how does the recovery or clean install work within the test builds ( or do they ?) if so what do they use for an image where as opposed to RTM >
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT folder (3.65GB ) in my other NTFS partition that looks to have the recently installed RTM in place upgrade OS image and a separtate ESD 3.11 GB folder as well .

Yea my 10547 recovery folder >install ESD is 3.25GB and is dated 3/19/15 it apparantly has an earlier test build in it .

It doesn't looks like there is a logic in there. On both 10532 & 10547 I always had install.esd in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT but until next build taking over.

Again Yea my test build 10547 C: Windows > recovery folder >install ESD file is 3.25GB and is dated 3/19/15 it apparantly has an earlier test build in it .

Here are the notes in the folder :

Upgrade will not replace the on-disk recovery image if this file is present. Do not delete or modify this file.

    Build ID: 10061.0.amd64fre.fbl_impressive.150410-2039
OTOH in 10547 the C:\$WINDOWS.~BT filder does not have the OS image in it any more since the upgrade was installed
whereas the RTM build on my other NTFS partition does along with a separtate 3.1 GB ESD file folder .

right....... there is nothing current in there . I'm thinking of deleting the files in it .

FWIW I'm downloading a Win 10 x64 home .ISO just to burn to a DVD and have ....... in case the in place RTM upgrade on my other partitian gets hosed. I have Win a 10x64 pro RTM DVD for the othert two boxes .

No curent test build ISO's though I wouldent mind one of those either or an ESD I can convert to make a DVD .
I'll maybe have to copy the next Insider build download before I install it or no ?
