An update on my search for W 10 folders was futile. I called HP and the tech was a first for me. He didn't answer my question, he started a sales pitch for a warranty on the software on my PC. The PC is not even a month old. He was very pushy. He did a diagnostic test and found 2 critical drivers. He said that is what I need the warranty for, HP will not fix this kind of thing, BS. I finally ask if he found W 10 software on my PC, he said no, it would have popped up right away. He could have told me that right away. I was very angry and that is unusual for me. He said I will fix those drivers for free my reply was NO! I don't trust you. I Xed out of the remote. Found a way to contact HP with an email and got a prompt reply with apologies. The are investigating the problem. This new W 8.1 desktop is the most nagging computer I have ever had. I will eventually get that stopped.

I checked my laptop and the Action Center had a message telling me to turn on windows update, there are important updates that need to be installed. I guess MS is still forcing the upgrade.

    Emma,

If you are using windows 7

Click on Action center, click turn off messages about windows update. Just remember to manually check windows update occasionally for updates not related to windows 10.

Thank you Groze I have done that. I did that to all of the things I don't want to hear from.

When I check to see if any updates have been installed, I turn off my wifi, so MS can not jump in.

I simply have the 7 installs on the two desktops here set to never check and manually run checks while connected since you have to be connected online in order to get any other updates to begin with. Don't forget when not keeping other softwares besides Windows alone updated you leave yourself more vulnerable to malwares and other security risks.

One excellent little freebie for Windows 7 as well as 8 and 8.1 is the Secunia Personal Software Inspector that will check for software not Windows updates. It goes right on and you will likely forget it's even there besides the System tray icon tucked away since it isn't active until you go to use it. I saw this article on Filehippo a few days ago:
Windows 10 Appears On Win 7, 8 Computers | TechBeat

as well as this article on the Windows IT Pro site:
Microsoft Installs Windows 10 by Default – by Accident | Windows 10 content from Windows IT Pro

looks like I'll avoid upgrading to Win10 for the rest of 2015 with this latest MS blunder

Trick is to download and install the necessary Windows security updates and avoid the Win 10 stuff from sneaking in .

Can't believe MS decided to list some Win 10 updates as important on Win 7 systems lol, don't they know that adds to their untrustworthy reputation?

I agree about Secunia PSI , thats a program everyone should have .

Secunia has been updated right along for use on 8, 8.1, and now 10 without any issues provided you upgrade an older version used on 7 to the latest that covers all four versions! That will perform automatic checks keeping you away generally from the Optional updates for anything other then MS there.

Now for a complete list of "Want to be gones"! as far as 10 sneak in updates one reference shows more then just the KB3035583 that allows the rest to come in but the others that need to be removed as well.

How many updates we are talking about?

    • KB 3035583 - According to Microsoft, this update enables "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available".
    • KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".
    • KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.
    • KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.
    • KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.
    • KB 2990214 . Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.

Those are the updates currently provided by Microsoft. Microsoft notes that users should not remove or block the updates 3044374 and 2990214 as they are used for Windows Update functionality and not only to upgrade to Windows 10.
That was from a much older report about 10 back in April seen at How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8 You can cross check them with what you find installed if you are still running 7 or 8 not including 8.1 in the report however.

So the list of chief suspects will be:
KB3035583 at the top of the list naturally! first "Found in Windows 7" previously removed but newer versions can show up!

KB2952664 also just now "Found in Windows 7" confirmed and removed and hidden once immediately showing up in the manual check for any new updates with an optional single by itself update just found and being watched after finding another failed upgrade once again.

    KB2976978 Most likely for 8, 8.1
    KB3021917 Most likely for 8, 8.1

    KB3044374 Not to be removed
    KB2990214 Not to be removed
with the last two 3044374 and 2990214 to maintain the Windows Update functionality leaving the other four as wide open targets to take pop shots at all you want! The article outlines how to see those four dealt with promptly.

I tried the GWX Control Center and I am not sure it works. It said there was nothing concerning W 10 on there, but I am not sure. I clicked on it to open it and it opened with results showing my PC was okay. Surely it would have taken sometime to scan for 10. I used it on the laptop and on my desktop, results were the same.

Emma, the GWX Control Panel looks for very specific entries both is registry and folders, it can do this almost instantly.
It should only be downloaded from the authors website to make sure you have a clean copy.
