Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent

All this stuff could actually be pretty funny, if it wasn't so sad. 
I already have several friends asking me about what options they should choose for their upcoming fruit stand purchases! 
The thing is that for me, I simply want to learn how to make this whole Windows world actually work for me! I'm fairly lucky in that I don't actually have any data on my machine and can safely and easily wipe it clean, back to nothing more than naked hardware.

Unless you have some kind of restore media you are a bit stuck your options seem to be
1) Contact your computer seller (if you got it from a shop/online ask them to send you appropriate restore media (unfortunately some charge for this.. but I would pass the charges on to Microsoft see what they say, but don't hold your breath)
2) If you have the license key printed on your computer you may be able to get a windows (whatever) disk, or if you know someone with a disk you could use that, you will need to get the drivers of the manufacturers website and you are only entitled to use the license key printed on your OWN computer and of course make sure its the same version of windows as you had on before.
3) Contact Microsoft tell them what has happened and ask them to send you some kind of restore media for the old O.S. I am very doubtful that will work as they will simply suggest you download the windows 10 media creation tool on another computer and make a windows 10 disk
I personally think Microsoft should take responsibility for this mess up, but I doubt they will they clearly have a one way agenda

Oh that's hilarious! I love it!
I have good news: the recovery partition was not yet made inaccessible, so she was able to get it back to "day one" condition (W8.0). So now I will remote in using Teamviewer, and prep the system for the W10 upgrade, so it will go smoothly.

Great post I found your link most interesting, especially the part where it explains Windows 10 adoption rates had slowed right down, then gained again when Microsoft ticked the ''optional'' update on.
He has a eightfold increase in downloads for his stop windows 10 control panel, also he's shown proof that Microsoft are changing users updates options remotely leading me to believe that Windows 10 is just the tip of the iceberg with intrusiveness.

Until and unless Microsoft does something else truly malicious, I will make one more statement and then humbly climb down off of my soap box!
First, I don't really care what logo/brand name is on my computer and/or operating system or software. I DO, however care about being spied on and manipulated for the purposes of advertising and reaching into folks' pocket$, especially mine!
For my purposes, a computer just needs to be tool to help and allow me to be productive in a manner to support me financially and intellectually. While advances in the speed and efficiency of the hardware/processors have been appreciated, the forcing upon us of more and more bloatware, adware and bells/whistles that can't be defeated simply hog much of that improved speed and efficiency. I know that many folks enjoy gaming, but if want to play, I'd prefer a unit designed solely for that purpose and allow my productivity machine to dedicate itself to that productivity.
My first computer, 1998 Mac, Blue& White, G3, tower with Office, iTunes and music recording software installed and the ability to send/receive email and access the internet, did everything I personally need a computer to do, albeit a little bit slow. As support for the older processor gradually diminished and eventually disappeared, I was forced into more advanced, complicated and intrusive software simply to improve speed and efficiency, along with losing the relative ease of data manipulation and use provided by the earlier OS. I also did not have the choice to keep using that same familiar user interface.
There must be some way to build a simple machine that only does exactly what I need/ask it to do and nothing else! Neither Windows OS or even Apple OS are capable of providing this simplicity!

What it does is put any number of people into a Catch 22 situation now not knowing whether to upgrade or not or even stay with the Windows OS! Some may simply end up saying "Foobar this!"" and simply turn to one of the OSs since those are now seeing the ability to run Windows programs by way of apps that emulate the virtual form of the Windows environment as far as what is needed to run them only.
It's just like Hyper-V that first came with 8 but carried on with 10 doesn't play friendly with VM ware and any other 3rd party virtual apps wanting to be the one and only when enabled. With this latest stunt it was never about intruding on your privacy for which they could care the least about but reaching the 1 billion machines mark to laugh in the faces of the competition saying "we have the monopoly now! 10 will be our finest moment!" "look at what they did!"

it certainly does damage the MS credibility far more then first thought! The ripple effect will be forth coming as a result. For the longest time people have known that the Pharmaceutical industry had turned into nothing but a large profit house and now seeing a software giant stoop to slippery tactics? to make a selling point doesn't say much in their favor!
But it wouldn't be any large concern about the home user to begin with since the corporate consumer is where MS actually sees their livelihood not from Staples or Office Max retail shelves. And this is why MS is now abandoning optical media in favor of supplying read only flash drives as an online option when going to download 10 and what will come later.
If each newer version comes by way of the updates more people will end up simply giving in and taking the upgrade for a price. That would be one manipulation being exploited right there. "You take it or else we drop support for your ..."? would almost fall into the "Held for Ransom" category as far as software upgrades are concerned. They get to a point where they have a tight hold on things people tend to take for granted on a daily basis.
When any political leader goes that far you would call it a dictatorship! "You will listen only to what we have to say! and do what we tell you has to be done!" The "we" being the MS team at the other end of the spectrum there would be manipulation to the extreme even for MS and eventually could end up seeing another Antitrust law suit brought against the software giant as it was for IE being included as the one and only browser not allowing the other options like Netscape in Windows back in the 90s! MS had to fork over a $1million a day fine to pay off the total fine opposed by a federal judge back then. U.S. VS. I'm afraid 8.1 may well be my last Windows OS, been with them since 3.1. Sad what they have done and the direction they are going. Then again, said it before, I'm most likely part of a dying breed. Party on 10 people!

With this type of stunt it certainly doesn't provide any shiny solution for MS but simply ends up casting more and more doubt as well as lack of trust in what motivates the software giant! And once people starting getting too suspicious having lost trust they often will simply move onto something else including a different OS entirely!
Here I will likely end up buying both flavors of 10 once the freebie offer is over and the much needed fixes are seen to usually for the second year any new version comes out. Vista saw it's SP1 desperately needed to fix the error of not displaying the correct amount of memory installed. 7 went well however before SP1 was even a consideration while 8 got immediately frowned on by how MS pulled a fast one rather then actually working out the dual platform GUI options ahead of time before simply stripping things away the desktop user was most familiar with!
This or what comes up next could well be what breaks the camel's back for a good number of people! While 10 actually looks like MS putting some effort in to follow up on what was started with 7 this latest bone head move however puts a stumbling block in there as far as the public opinion polls would go!

Well sir, underneath all of the good points you've made, the very first pile of straws on that camel's back (and in my opinion, Windows' greatest flaw) was the fact that Microsoft has never designed and/or built the hardware to match their software product. This has led to a multitude of "Johnny come lately" manufacturers coming out of the woodwork with "better ideas" on how to build a better machine, all the while trying to cut costs and corners. The OS exhibits different glitches on different hardware and consistency of performance is simply a cruel joke! Couple this with having to chase around to multiple builders (who are more than eager to pass the buck) for support of the widely varied components. This becomes more of an issue as the price point goes down.
One reason the fruit vendor has been so financially successful and has developed such a loyal fan base (even at a somewhat higher price point) is that they make their own hardware specifically for their software. Please don't misunderstand, the fruit folks pull their own share of stunts and bone head moves, but are usually pretty darned quick on the recovery/fixing side of issues. Not to mention their phone support is pretty stellar, to the point that if the low level phone answerer can't help, your issue gets kicked up to an expert really quickly.
The more I study, the more likely I see something like Linux in my personal future.
But hey, I'm going to school to learn how to maintain and fix this Microsoft crap and as long as the public and businesses keep buying and using it, I'll be pretty well ensured of some fairly well paid employment!
I've still got a lot to learn!

Actually, the last time I installed 7 on my dads computer he called and complained that they installed this windows 10 crap.
So the next time I ran a script that uninstalled EVERYTHING they did and turned off auto update.
Microsoft is plain god damn evil and cares less about their customers wishes as you can see with how Win 10 turned out.
They only start caring when it hits them in the bank.
So the next time I go to his house instead I am going to delete 7 and install Ubuntu because everything he does can be done on Linux.
THIS is how Microsoft wants to play it and if Fallout 4 wasn't coming I would use Ubuntu as well.
I'm tired of being ignored as a consumer and you should too.
Win 10 has turned out to be a punchline, a bug filled joke that wins over 7 due to the lack of scalability for 4k monitors in 7.

Well the thing to note about the fruit company from the start is that yes they do make "their own" hardwares leaving custom building "your own" case totally out of the equation! You have to "buy their stuff" consistently with overpriced softwares for a start. And they write their own device drivers for their limited hardware options.
Windows on the other hand while being far from a totally open source OS is far more flexible and how MS has been able to grow over the years by knowing how to manipulate the market to their favor. While most now are running the 64bit Windows for example the market still swirls with 32bit apps. And Windows still sees a 32bit flavor with 10 indicating the reports that MS planned on dumping the 32bit kernel entirely were never based on actual fact of just what the MS plans entailed.
The real factor that keeps MS going however is that the software market itself plays favorites with Windows 99% seeing the typical amount of fruit wares and now even some lean towards the Linux crowd while wrapped around the MS finger quite well. And as for MS not keeping up on fixes that will still remain the Legacy of XP there! It was only after 7 was first seen that MS decided to release the some 1,000+ fixes the other older version was in desperate need of?! And that was because MS knew people would still be dual booting XP with W7 6yrs. ago.
Since MS has still been riding on 7's success all this time and 8 went over like a lead balloon they now have to get back on track with 10 in order to see it made a success while the change in tactics has cause for concern. This automatic in your face brilliant scheme was bound to back fire in their faces as it has! But as far as MS being just another greedy corporation they are far from being the only one that easily fitted into that category. That would be a totally separate discussion there.
