Sorry but It has been a very long time since last heard such an idiotic advice. Not updating your Windows pc is in fact suicide. Nowadays new security holes are popping up on a daily basis and the pcs you mention have probably been captured by a bot net without the owners knowing it. You got the whole thing upside down. Experts who know what they are doing might (still not a good idea) disable Windows updates. But so called "basic users" should never even touch Windows update. They don't have the knowledge to judge whether they need a certain update or not. There are other ways of stopping Windows 7 or 8 from updating. But don't disable the Windows update service. Not only are you puttting yourself at risk, by running a probably malware infected pc you are also a threat to any not infected pc out there.

I agree with you about the updates, that could be bad news. But that doesn't take away from Microsoft's aggressive upgrade policy with Windows 10. It's a shame for a company to act in this manner, the solution is really simple just release an optional update that allows Windows 7/8/8.1 users to

    1) un-install any GWX related updates..completely
    2) Stop them from installing again.. ever
    3) Will not nag again under any circumstances

I purchased my Windows 7 because it was Windows 7. Microsoft make a big noise about their extended support for these Operating Systems but seem to wanting folks to upgrade to Windows 10 and intruding on the very heart of their current O.S. to do it., that it is free is irrelevant and it is unforgivable.

I have tried a clean install on Windows7 installing the updated Updater and the reg file that is meant to block any update but almost every day now I get a GWX.exe error, enough is enough. Maybe we should write to Microsoft and inform them that we will charge for storage of the downloaded Windows 10 files at a rate of £100 per day. !!

My rant over (for now) zoo

How does one update windows 7 if the windows 10 is hiding the other updates?

Others are finding that the Windows Update screen is only offering them the option to begin the upgrade process, with other system updates being hidden from view.
You can read the full article here. Link credit goes to labeeman. In fact, I gave this advice that I wouldn't normally do. Do a full image backup before installing windows updates. In fact, some people who have set it to automatically update, got windows 10 downloaded that were on metered connection. I think the manual setting for windows 7/8.1 is fine. Maybe you can go back to the automatic update after the free offer expires.

This really is madness that it is being forced upon users. What's the bet that they will get so much negative feedback that they will be forced to back-pedal?
It's shocking it really is , for the average computer user this is a real nightmare because they will probably end up with Win 10 installed whether they wanted it or not .

Many have no clue about update hiding etc... , i would have thought MS would have already gotten a hint of the outrage people have over the initial upgrade nagware but now they make it even worse for people .

They clearly are not as smart as i thought , this is going to outrage people , they just don't get it.

Altae, I have not updated for over 2 years and I am still living.........for now. Not updating does not affect you or others in anyway, just me and my PC and it is my PC so why does it upset you so much. People who are forced to upgrade may not have the knowledge to revert back to their previous version if the upgrade does not work. They would be better off not getting any updates.

Someone said something about blocking updates until W 10 upgrade is no longer free. That sounds like a very good idea.

    Emma,
The problem with you not updating means that you do not have recent security/virus/malware protections and it makes this DEFINITELY not just your problem. It allows your computer to become compromised and/or infected in ways that you can transfer to friends, companies and associates on the internet and through emails, etc! The fact that you've noticed no issues on your machine does not mean that you're not causing issues for others!

I'm afrait he is seriously telling people to completely disable the update service which means no more driver updates, no more flash updates for internet explorer, no more security updates... That's just insane and that's also why this is my last post concerning his hilarious "advice".

Wow. Just seems like we are no longer allowed to choose whether we want 10 on all our rigs or not....
That's the impression you are being left with regardless of this being intentional or not by MS! It's definitely an attention getter regardless of how you look at it! I think a lot of this came from the reluctance businesses have had over the years to continue upgrading every time any new version came out and why support had to be extended for old XP Pro networks far longer then with any other version to date.

Sadly I have also seen a few GWX.exe errors on my Windows 7 machine despite uninstalling and hiding the KB3035583 update. and putting the 'do not upgrade the OS' reg key on my computer. A few friends have just given up and installed 10 just to stop the errors and nagging. It's like it's a constant battle to keep window 10 away from your machine spoiling altogether the fun of using windows 7, frankly I feel cheated.

I personally think Microsoft should release a simple update that actually stops and uninstalls any GWX updates taking place, a kind of one time fix for those who simply want to stay with Windows 7/8/8.1

Personally I think Microsoft should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves, I no longer consider Windows a safe O.S. not even 7 now and have started using Linux as the stable secure OS of choice, and only using my Windows machine for Games.

Well here I intentionally set up a 10/7 dual boot and am still seeing the latest UNINTENTIONAL note failed upgrade attempt still resulting from having those two extra drives left plugged preventing the 7 side of the dual boot from simply being compromised! If you want to sabotage any automatic upgrade and put up with the error that's one way to keep 7 or 8 going since the 10 installer is a bit retarded on where to put things!(boot files, temp install folders BTand WS for the 64bit).

After seeing that come up out of the blue again after hiding the KB3035583 update well I decided to run a check today to find 10 new updates and guess what?
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3035583)---BOGEY ALERT!

I copied the details which show this as your average "security update" under Important and not under Optional where it was first seen suggesting other so called security updates may not be what they intended to appear as?! That's a slippery slope type of tactic to insure people's 7 and 8 machines get trashed for not upgrading immediately to 10 I would say! It certainly will end up shining a bad light on MS!

The one thing I can say through all of this however is having not seen either the GWX.exe or GWXUX.exe files when running searches on the 7 drive on two separate desktops. But at the same time executables can be renamed and get on looking like something else if MS was trying to be slippery?
