I'm not certain what 'slang' word(s) I used and if you notice I said free version twice in the first line. I don't particularly care what program you use, as long as it works for you. I do like flexibility though. If you want to only back up your Data Drive and nothing else, you can't do that with the Windows image, you can with Macrium. If I want to only back up my Games drive, I can't with Windows, I have to back up the system drive and the Games drive, I can do that with Macrium. If I have multiple operating systems and I would like to clone it to another drive, Windows won't do that, Macrium will clone any drive or partition on my computer. If I have an image of my Data drive and only want to image what has been added since the last backup, Windows won't do that, Macrium will. All for free.

Norton Ghost was always pretty technical and difficult to configure. Acronis almost takes over the whole Operating System and is extremely difficult to get rid of, if you decide to change. It works pretty well though. It just depends on what you want in an imaging program and whether it is reliable. If you can't restore an image, it does not matter how 'user friendly' it is. It's worthless. That is true for any of them.

I think I will just stick with my reformatting and reinstall everything. It is easier on this old brain of mine.
I hear you on that one! Generally a good number of us will play it geek like and see the drive wiped every so often to put that next clean install of everything on again. That fresh feel of the performance when any version first goes on is what many try to maintain.

I have had Acronis on here now for the last 5yrs. between 7 and now 10 without any issues. It works faster then the Windows backip option as well from seeing an image of the 1tb host drive with over 400gb of files on at times created in 34 minutes time while the Windows option while still reliable in most cases would take 90 minutes or so?! The size of the image on disk was also smaller and when going to restore on it didn't matter where the image had been moved to as far as seeing drive letters changed, folders renamed while the Window option is strapped to the one folder on the one drive.

As far as Ghost I never ran that while I have taken a look at Paragon as far as paid for softwares. I presently only have the Paragon extFS for Windows on that is intended to mount VFat volumes which I am still looking over. That is supposed to allow access to the Unix(mainly Linux) based volumes on a Windows machine. That would be plus for the live data recovery sticks which is usually one of the few places besides a VM I run the other OS on at this time.

In most cases I never would even need an image since for each downloaded app as one example I generally see 4 or 5 to the two storage drives, the external HD there at times if not the remote case, and the 10 drive now. If you run into a bad download a fresh one will usually work as the replacement as well as seeing things manually backed incrementally rather then seen in lump sums in the event of mishap before the next image.

NIghthawk, I started out with W 98 and until W 7 came along it was good to reformat, the pc was faster and worked better afterward. I did not notice a difference with W 7, I think they were made better.

Essenbe, I don't think it was slang as much as just overall terminology like IOS, that has always been my problem with PCs. I was the first one in my local family that had one and I did not have anyone to talk computer with me. Having computer friends is an important part of how you learn. When my family and friends finally got one, they had no desire to learn about it, they just used it as a tool. When I helped my neighbor's visitors, I was so happy talking computers and helping them.

Type correction made in quote for you there! I was ahead of you there starting off learning Dos and 3.1 with the first pc at home but definitely not the first ever used having worked at DEC for a period of time before the building was closed up when they began down sizing back in the 80s! In school for electronic allowed some time to get more interested in working on them and years past I decided to dump an old word processor to get into the IBM museum piece.

When asked why I didn't want a 586 brand new machine sitting there by someone who ran a home custom building business I said I had to learn from scratch on how to do things. When one small shop carrying recycled softwares opened up and a temp worker came in to do repairs while that person was in school I bartered the IBM clunker away for a newer 486 eventually to be replaced by the first custom build. I was still able to run 98SE on the one or two that followed the first until 98 was history driverwise except for seeing a 98 VM on 7!

Now besides the Straight A average I saw in the schooling I took I still had to have the hands on type experience. I ended up building the cases for everyone else around me since they simply were not interested in more then checking the mail and these days social networking.

In planning for the next build to come while not any immediate concern but the eventual the Octocore type cpu(eight core instead of the present quad core) got noticed in the few years as one option while I already know that I will never even use up a full 16gb even with multiple VMs running.

Learned Basic on a Vic 20, 3.1 was my first MS OS. Staying with 8.1 for quite awhile.

And I admit to being old. Think 10 is more for the younger generations and that is fine. Simply staying with 8..1 and see nothing that would make me want to move to 10. Realize I'm a very small percentage and literally a dying customer base.

Popey, you can't be older than I am. It makes me angry when someone thinks seniors are stuck and won't learn anything new. As I have said before I love buying a PC with a new OS. It has always been fun until W 8. Now I have a W 8 laptop, a new desktop with W8.1 and of course my desktop with W 7. I have made the 8 and 8.1 like 7 and I should be able to use them for years since they are so new. So I have tried them and still prefer my 7. It gets me where I want to go faster than the newer versions.

Most of the younger people I have talked to like W 8 on up, but I think we should be able to keep what we have and like without ridicule. I have found myself using the pc less and less. I have left most of the forums I have read and posted in and there is nothing left to do on it except for email and to google for something I am wondering about.

Emma, I try to learn something everyday. Only saying 10 has nothing I want at this point. Is funny how people are expected to upgrade. A bit like if you have a car you love but people are telling you to buy a new one. Never been a crowd person, make my own decisions. Right now 10 has nothing that makes me want to move to it.

I have played with it on a VM.

Not any surprise since I don't have any immediate plans to dump 7 while getting most things to run on 10. That's from paying the original $379.99 tag for the twin dvd pack for Ultimate back in 2009! 10 however has been running quite well since I have also been putting it through the OS tests to how well it will handle what gets thrown at it! It does run quite a bit like 7 while some things will tend to go slower due to the dual platform.

As a rule you may find the new features 10 is bringing in with it not so involved since you already have Hyper-V in 8.1 running 10 in a VM isn't a problem! 10 comes in with the new Virtual Desktops option however so if you have something running on one desktop and someone else wants to jump in to get on a social network or check their email you simply move it to a second out of sight desktop! That's what the new Task View button is about there! You can move running apps from one desktop to another without fuss!

The Start menu is back but with Tiles included. For a $5 fee I think you may already familiar with Start 10 being the latest by Stardock which offers the 7 menu. Modern menu, and Menu with tiles. I still prefer the option to set the shutdown button they removed with 8 that was seen with 7 but with the Modern menu option since I kept that set for restart not shutdown.

Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent-start-menu-10-configuration-options.jpg

That not only took care of the tiles but brought back the shutdown which could be set for restart over right clicking on something every time being an annoyance since the right click options are fewer in number as well as no longer having the option.

Again, the "new features" mean nothing to me. I'm happy with what I have now. Not going to to go for the new shinny penny just because it is there.

I'm so old I use just one desktop. I pretty much use 8.1 like XP, no reason to move on to 10.

Support for 8.1 is going to 2023 right now. I'll be about 70, will deal with it then. :)

I agree and don't think for a minute that your in the extreme minority , everyone i know prefers 7 over 10 . Win 10 has way to much stuff they don't use or have interest in and the stuff they want to get rid of is much too hard to get rid of .

Everything should be much easier to uninstall if you don't want it but it's not . You shouldn't need to use "powershell" to remove stuff according to most i talk to .

Some stuff MS allows you to remove easily and some stuff they make it much more involved to remove if you can remove it at all , which is unacceptable to many of them.
